Your cabin nestles against a cliff, overlooking a panoramic view of the Fortaleza ravine. Majestic red rock mountains rise above the lush slopes of the barranco, where palm trees, euphorbia, prickly pear cacti and a profusion of wildflowers flourish in the Canarian sunshine. You have entered a sub tropical wonderland .
As you scan this magical landscape, your eyes are drawn to the rock that towers above all others. This is La Fortaleza, a great archaeological site that has revealed only a small portion of its secrets. Sacred to the guanches, the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands, Fortaleza is believed to have been their last stronghold before they were defeated by Spanish invaders in the 15 th century.
Your comfort is assured by modern conveniences, both inside the cosy cabin and outdoors on the terrace, in the garden and perched above the ravine, the swimming pool. You will almost certainly dive in after exploring the numerous hiking trails around the area and further afield. Or you can just lie on a sunbed and read a book.
There’s wifi, satellite TV and close by the El Alpendre restaurant, where Felix, your jovial host, cooks delicious breakfast, lunch and early supper. There’s fresh eggs, vegetables and bread for sale plus an impressive section of wines and local craftwork.
This is rural holiday perfection, Gran Canaria style.
