The city's landmark, Sommeregg Castle, sits high atop a hill in the Schloßau district. The history of this hilltop castle dates back to the 13th century. From the observation platform at the castle, you can enjoy a fantastic view of Seeboden, Milstätter See, Dobratsch, and the Karawanks. There is a restaurant on the ground floor of the castle, which serves knightly meals. A torture museum is housed on the upper floor. Supported by Amnesty International, this museum is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Approximately 70 faithfully reconstructed exhibits show instruments of truth-finding from the times of the Inquisition. The last witch trial in Carinthia took place at Sommeregg in 1653. The annual knight games take place at Sommeregg Castle and in a specially erected medieval village in August, attracting visitors from far beyond the region. Book your vacation rental with modern amenities in the best location, with views of the beautiful panorama of the region, and spend unforgettable holidays.
The area around your vacation home in Seeboden invites you to enjoy activities in nature. Boredom is guaranteed not to arise here. The Tschiernock, as part of the Millstätter Alpe, is considered Seeboden's local mountain and has a reputation as an outstanding hiking area with toboggan runs in winter. A hiking and cycling trail around the lake runs without incline. The most beautiful areas are on the natural south shore of the unique lake. Here you can follow the gorge trail along the Riegenbach or walk along the banks of the Drau near Spittal. With a bit of luck, you'll find one of the famous ruby-red gemstones of the area. In the summer months, numerous swimming spots and opportunities for diving and surfing await. For beginners, there is a surfing school and a diving base. For a vacation with a dog in Seeboden, there is a dog beach at Presenthein near the ship landing stage. Speaking of ships – five passenger ships let you enjoy the breathtaking mountain scenery from the water. Be sure to plan an excursion to Villach or the Mörthbauernhof.
The culinary tradition in Carinthia is considered hearty and down-to-earth. However, the typical Alpine cuisine is influenced by the neighboring countries Italy and Slovenia. Typical dishes include Schlickkrapfen, Klachlsuppe, Kletzennudeln, and Frigga (a recipe made with eggs and bacon). Carinthia's national dish, however, is undisputedly the Carinthian noodle, made of thin dough filled with breadcrumbs, potatoes, mint, and chervil. The sides of the noodle pockets are traditionally crimped, or artfully sealed. Every housewife and houseman should master this discipline. The cheese noodles with spicy cheese and various fillings (meat, mushrooms, or potatoes) are also available in sweet versions. The numerous mountain lakes and crystal-clear rivers offer excellent fish – whether char, trout, Carinthian Låxn, Renke, carp, or even crayfish. Carinthian wine is an excellent accompaniment, considered one of the best in the country. The centers of viticulture are the regions Klagenfurt-Villach, Lavanttal, and St. Veit an der Glan. Every year in early September, the Seebodner Strudel Festival takes place in Seeboden.
