There are numerous sights and excursion destinations to discover in the surroundings of Kötschach-Mauthen. Several castle ruins and castles are located very close to your holiday apartment. The Pittersberg castle ruin dates back to the 13th century and was already destroyed in the 17th century. Some wall remains and a cistern have been preserved. Southeast of the town lies the Weidenburg castle ruin, which also dates back to the 13th century and of which some impressive wall remains have survived the test of time. Below the ruin stands Weidenburg Castle, a cubic, three-story building with a hipped roof and attached chapel. The complex dates back to the 17th century. Older is Mandorf Castle, which now houses seminar rooms. Among the churches and chapels, the late Gothic parish church of Kötschach is worth seeing, which was built between 1518 and 1527 in place of an older church. In Mauthen and St. Jakob in the Lesach Valley, there are other noteworthy churches. The town hall of Kötschach-Mauthen houses the museum 1015–18, which deals with the so-called mountain war of the years 1915 to 1918 between Austria-Hungary and Italy in an exhibition, whose front was not far from the town. The museum has already been awarded several prizes, including the Austrian Museum Prize.

During the summer season, the hut can also be reached by mountain bike. If you take a little more time and set off early, you can reach the Adriatic coast near Grado in Italy in three hours.

Carinthian cuisine is a mixture of traditional Alpine cuisine with influences from neighboring countries Italy and Slovenia. One of the most typical dishes of the region is Kasnudel filled with potatoes or quark, spinach, chard or meat and served with hot butter or pork lard. After a strenuous mountain hike, Ritschert is just the thing, a hearty stew of smoked meat, barley, beans and vegetables. Every September, a cheese festival takes place in Kötschach-Mauthen, presenting the region's milk and cheese products. You should definitely try the Gailtaler Almkäse, which comes from 14 surrounding alpine pastures.

The market town of Kötschach-Mauthen is located near Hermagor in the Austrian federal state of Carinthia at the entrance of the Lesach Valley. Unfortunately, there has been no direct train connection since 2017. The nearest train station is in Oberdrauburg.
