It was fun.

We felt very comfortable in the spacious holiday apartment of the Maßmang family. Everything you need is there, really well and solidly equipped. Very nice hosts who are concerned that you lack nothing. It is wonderfully quiet there!

Absolutely nothing to complain about

Everything was to our satisfaction. The apartment is very quiet and in top condition. The handover of the keys was absolutely problem-free, and otherwise, we have nothing to criticize about the vacation rental service. Since we have been in the area several times, we knew what to expect. As for the apartment, everything was great. The Allgäu is a very beautiful area for a relaxing holiday. We can recommend their apartment without hesitation. Should we vacation in the area again, we would be happy to get back to you.

Which sights are there in Oberallgäu?

Centuries-Old History Between Mountains, Forests, and Deep Gorges

The historic places of Upper Allgäu attract with all sorts of sights. In the old town of Kempten, you will find facades from Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque periods alongside modern architecture. The town hall dates back to 1474. The Prince's Abbey of Kempten, founded as early as 752, is also worth seeing. The Baroque Basilica of St. Lorenz is part of the extensive complex. The special feature of the church was the division between the abbey and the parish church. While the nave served the community, the choir under the dome was reserved for the convent of the abbey. The greatest attraction of Upper Allgäu is the breathtaking landscape with its peaks, valleys, rivers, lakes, and forests. Visit the deepest rock gorge in Central Europe, the spectacular Breitachklamm. The Breitach has carved its way through the rocks to a depth of about 150 meters. The upper entrance is located in Austria, and the lower entrance of the gorge is near Oberstdorf. The hiking trail winds through the gorge for 2.5 kilometers. The gorge has only been accessible since the 20th century. The gorge is a special natural experience.

What do you need to experience in Oberallgäu?

The Fairy Tale Castle of the Fairy Tale King

King Ludwig II is an integral part of Bavarian history. A destination in the neighboring East Allgäu, which attracts nearly 1.5 million visitors from Germany and the entire world each year, is Neuschwanstein Castle of the so-called Fairy Tale King. The reclusive King Ludwig II spent only a few months in the castle before he died in 1886. The building, designed in romantic eclecticism, is one of the main works of European Historicism. Although (or perhaps because) many architecture critics describe it as kitschy, it has become a model worldwide: in Disneyland, Las Vegas, and in numerous films. But experience it for yourself. From your apartment in Kempten, you can reach the fairy tale castle in half an hour. From your affordably priced holiday home or private apartment in a prime location in Oberstdorf, Neuschwanstein is about an hour away. A visit is well worth a detour to the historic town of Füssen. The Benedictine Abbey of St. Mang and a bailiwick were established there as early as the 8th century. The old town fascinates with old burgher houses, museums, and a festival hall on the shores of the Forggensee with a view of Neuschwanstein. Now simply book an apartment (FeWo) or a cozy holiday accommodation, for example in Steibis, Sulzberg, Sonthofen, Rettenberg, Fischen, or Obermaiselstein, according to your personal wishes with a view of the Alps, at an affordable price and in the best location, and spend unforgettable holidays according to your personal wishes between hiking trails in a wonderful landscape and cross-country ski tracks. Pure relaxation!

What can you experience in Oberallgäu with children?

Family Bliss in the Mountains

The magnificent region in the mountains around Oberstdorf is also known as the Allgäu Lake District. Especially in summer, the whole family enjoys the numerous bathing lakes at different altitudes, for example in the Alpsee-Grünten holiday region. Family-friendly and lovingly furnished private homes offer plenty of space for young and old. Bavaria is also very dog-friendly. Numerous apartments and holiday homes are suitable for a holiday with a dog. Your four-legged friends will enjoy extensive walks. In summer, explore Upper Allgäu by bike, for example on the 130-kilometer-long Iller Cycle Path or on the Lake Constance-Königssee Cycle Path. And in winter, of course, it's off to the many ski slopes. In Oberstaufen, the family ski area Ski-Arena Steibis attracts beginners and advanced skiers, whether downhill, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, or sledding for the little ones. By the way: With the Allgäu-Walser Card, you get discounted admission to over 200 recreational facilities in the mountains here and in Kleinwalsertal. There are also discounts for numerous events. Also visit the idyllic town of Immenstadt or hike through Burgberg or up the 1834m high Hochgrat.

Where can I eat out in Oberallgäu?

Eating like a God in Bavaria

A holiday in Bavaria always means eating well and heartily. The place is known for its hearty snacks (Vesper) and excellent beers. Many restaurants have their own brewery on-site. You will find light and dark beers, wheat beers, and the strong Bock beer. Near your apartment or affordable holiday home, you will find numerous inns and restaurants with local specialties from local bakeries, butchers, and mountain dairies. Flour, eggs, milk, and cheese are the basics for Spätzle, Knöpfle, and Maultaschen. Kasspatzen are cheese Spätzle, preferably made with raw milk mountain cheese. Liver dumpling soup is also found on the menus, as are game and fish dishes. Trout and Lake Constance fish are the basis for these. If you want to wield the cooking spoon in your own accommodation, you will find fresh and local products at the weekly markets and farm shops in the region. A separate chapter should be dedicated to the many sweet dishes, delicious cakes, and mighty tortes of Allgäu. Apple cake with vanilla ice cream is ubiquitous. At Christmas, the bakeries smell of Springerle, anise-flavored egg dough cookies. Springerle are also baked for other religious holidays and events such as weddings or engagements, each with appropriate motifs. Carving the templates used to be part of a confectioner master's craftsmanship.

What is a must-see in Oberallgäu?

Traditions and Traditional (Art) Crafts

In Upper Allgäu, numerous traditional festivals, art and antique markets, flea markets, and craftsmen's markets take place throughout the year. Special attention is deserved by the traditional Allgäu folk costumes, which keep the local customs alive. Be inspired by the Allgäu Festival Week in August, the bonfire after Ash Wednesday, or a Viehscheid, the cattle drive from the alpine pastures in the fall of each year. Culture and nature are closely linked here. No matter what time of year you rent an apartment (FeWo) or a holiday home in Upper Allgäu, there will definitely be a village festival nearby: Maypole setting in spring, harvest festivals in autumn, and Christmas markets in winter. The Experience Christmas Market in Bad Hindelang attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year. Learn more about the traditions of Upper Allgäu in the small museums of the region. Visit the carriage museum and the local history museums in Oberstaufen and Bad Hindelang, as well as the Allgäu Mountain Farmers Museum in Diepolz.
