Hearty feasting
The cuisine in
Upper Austria combines typical Austrian dishes such as Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz, or Kaiserschmarrn with influences from Germany and the Czech Republic. This is where dumplings come into play, which are available in a wide variety of variations in the region – hearty as a main course or side dish, as well as a sweet dessert. Meat dumplings – potato dumplings with meat filling – serve as a full meal. A regional specialty is Surbratl, a marinated pork roast. Some dishes come from the simple cuisine of farmers, such as Erdäpfelkäs, mashed potatoes with cream and onions as a bread spread, Maurerforelle, a sausage with onions, or Innviertler Essigwurst, a sour sausage salad. The Brettljause is recommended as an ideal meal during a break on a hike: a wooden board with various types of meat, sausage, and cheese, served with mustard and pickles. The best wines in the country come from
Burgenland and Styria.
Waterfalls, mountain lakes, and fun on the slopes all year round
Hinterstoder is known as the "Pearl of the Alps." The stunning scenery of the Totes Gebirge with peaks over 2,500 meters high surrounds the valley. In summer, the region is a paradise for hiking and climbing. Two long-distance hiking trails pass through the village – the Nordalpenweg 01 and the Salzsteigweg 09. The Nordalpenweg leads from Lake Neusiedl near Vienna to Bregenz on Lake Constance. The Salzsteinweg leads from Sternstein to Arnoldstein through Upper Austria,
Styria, and Carinthia. Natural attractions in the region include the Schiederweiher, the Strumboding waterfall, and the Polsterlucke. Spend your
vacation with your dog, and your four-legged family members will have plenty of exercise. Landlords and innkeepers are known to be particularly pet-friendly. In winter, head up to the Hutterer Höss. The slopes reach up to 2,000 meters above sea level. A Sunny Kids Park, a SNOWtrail adventure slope, and a speed track offer fun on the slopes for young and old. The Hannes-Trinkl World Cup track challenges even experienced skiers. Also, take a trip to the market town of Windischgarsten or Neumarkt in Mühlkreis or Roßleithen. Steyr is only about 50 kilometers away.
