We spent a wonderful winter weekend with 5 families. The house is lovingly maintained - of course, corresponding to its year of construction, but very well kept, perfectly clean, well-equipped, and very versatile. Peter and Annemarie are the nicest hosts one could imagine: flexible, easily reachable, and dedicated.

Thank you for the lovely stay! We had a great weekend in the house with 11 friends. It is a bit nested, but offers each or each smaller group a space of their own. Otherwise nothing was missing in the house! The small hall in particular was great for sitting together longer in the evenings. We would love to come back and thank you especially for the warm welcome in the house!

The house owner received us very friendly and showed us all the rooms. We moved in with 16 people (including 8 children) and were happy to have already made beds and freshly brewed coffee. The house offers a lot of space on two floors, so that smaller groups could withdraw. The many bathrooms were all very clean. The area is beautiful and quiet (apart from the church bell that rings exactly at seven o'clock) and is ideal for numerous hikes. Geocaching fans will also get their money's worth here. We also recommend the Edertalsperre, which is about 25 minutes by car to the south and offers something for the youngest with a climbing park, adventure path and petting zoo. We all felt very comfortable and thank our hosts for the pleasant time of relaxation!

The Castle Towers High Above

From the town center, you climb the castle hill via the only access road. Above the north shore of the lake, enjoy a magnificent view of the Edersee and the surrounding forests from the castle. The history of the hilltop castle dates back to the year 1120. Until 1655, the expanded facility served as the residence of the counts here, until they moved to Arolsen. Afterwards, the castle served as a fortress, barracks, penitentiary, and women's prison, until it came into public ownership at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, the complex houses a castle hotel with a restaurant and café, as well as a museum on the history of Waldeck Castle. The mountain railway, a cable car, connects the castle hill with the shore of the Edersee. Back in the village, a visit to the old town with Waldeck's town church from the 14th century is worthwhile. Stroll through the historic alleys with half-timbered houses from several centuries.

Pure Nature – Waldeck Around the Lake

The natural highlight of the region is the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. Germany's ancient beech forests have been under special protection by UNESCO since 2017 and are listed as a World Natural Heritage site. Special attention is given to the European beech, which only occurs in Europe's summer-green deciduous forests. Additionally, extraordinary forest landscapes such as noble deciduous block forests, oak forests, river floodplains, and meadow valleys are included. Another highlight of the region is the Scheid Peninsula with a wide range of sports opportunities, plenty of restaurants and cafés, and a boat landing for the Edersee passenger shipping. From here, two passenger ships with onboard dining sail on the Edersee to the Edertal dam, stopping at various landing stages. Boats can also be rented at the boat moorings on the east and west shores. The Scheid Peninsula also has a bathing beach and a separate beach section for dogs. They have been cultivated in Waldecker Land for centuries, much longer than the potato, which only later came to Europe from South America. While baking bread, another specialty of the state also emerges: Ploatz, bacon cake, and onion cake are put in the same oven and consist, similar to pizza, of yeast dough. The Anonymous Masterpiece of Marienthal Church

The history of the ten communities of the town dates back to the Middle Ages. In the district of Netze, there is a former Cistercian monastery from the 14th century. The Marienthal Monastery has one of the oldest bells in Germany. The monastery was founded by the Counts of Waldeck themselves and still houses their burial place today. A significant piece of art is the three-part Gothic winged altar. It was created by an anonymous master, whose only verifiable work is the Netzer Altar. On the inside, there are depictions from the childhood and Passion of Christ. On the outside, the Adoration of the Magi is remarkable, depicted here in three generations. A particular stylistic feature is the compositional use of empty spaces between the figures. After the introduction of the Reformation in 1526, the nuns, some novices, and the abbess remained in the monastery until it was converted into a dairy farm at the end of the 16th century.
