Description
Grandma's holiday cottage is the perfect place to simply switch off and let your soul dangle. Whether alone, with family or friends, the house offers a lot of recreational possibilities such as the sauna, the whirlpool and the swimming pool with roof. It is also surrounded by a large garden where you can sit around the campfire in the evening, play basketball or football, lie in the sun or eat the apples from the trees in autumn and much more. The house is situated on a hill, where you can look out over the beautiful hilly Bergisch landscape in which the holiday cottage is situated. The Bergischeland is an excellent place to do a lot of sport activities or to go on excursions to places of interest such as hells, castles and museums. Follow the road uphill behind the house to the adjacent forest, where you can go for long hikes and bike rides. If you follow the road downhill towards the centre, you can reach all shops, restaurants and public transport on foot in a few minutes.

Only 30 minutes away from the pulsating city of Cologne, which has the greatest influence on the region, you can recover splendidly from the "hustle and bustle of the big city". If, on the other hand, you have had enough of the tranquillity of the "Bergisches", you can quickly travel the 40 km by car via the A4, although bus (OVAG) and train (RB 25) also lead directly into the heart of the Rhineland metropolis.
More and more attractions are being added at the moment. The most recent spectacular addition was added to the tourist offer just under a year ago, when the 35-million-year-old cave, which was only discovered in 2019, was revamped for tourism with the "Windloch". While you won't be able to visit the cave directly (it is also currently being further explored), families will discover a lot about the formation and course of caves in general and in particular via the 8.4km long "cave trail". A "cave experience centre" is to be opened in the course of 2022 in the ticket office area of the "Aggertalhöhle" cave located in the direct vicinity. And it's just 3km to get there!
As mentioned at the beginning, hikers and cyclists will find a Dorado of different paths and routes in the Bergisch region - and around every bend there is a new, sometimes far-reaching and breathtaking view. The hiking and cycling bus will also take you back to the starting point of your excursion after the tour. Some app providers also have great tours that you can discover by MTB - electric or conventional.
But also the sporty road cyclists get their money's worth in the Bergisch - and maybe also reach their limits: The short and fast, varied "up and down" is incredibly demanding on your stamina and fitness. The professionals and amateurs alike notice this during the annual day tour "Rund um Köln" (Around Cologne): In the Bergisch region, the wheat is often separated from the chaff, and it is not uncommon for breakaway successes to be made possible by the cornerstone in the Bergisch region. If you can ride fast here, you can do it anywhere.
In this respect: break the wheel and the spokes!
A very special highlight, especially in summer, are of course the many dams. The Bergisch region has a total of 12 reservoirs, although the best-known one, the Wiehltalsperre (Wiehl Reservoir), which is used only for drinking water, may not be entered or used
Engelskirchen itself is also home to the "Panorama Pool" on the Rommersberg. From the centre of the village, a narrow and admittedly quite steep path / trail winds its way up the hill from Bergische Strasse (opposite Pizzeria Side). Of course, it is easier to go by car, but especially on hot weekdays, the many parking spaces at the panorama pool are sometimes too few - the view from the large sunbathing lawn over the Agger valley is too beautiful, even for stressed-out Cologne residents.
Other highlights are, of course, "Schloss Gimborn" in its Sleeping Beauty slumber, "Schloss Homburg" - and if you are already in Nümbrecht - why not let your gaze wander over the entire Bergisches Land: The "Trum" and "Wildwipfelpfad" in the "Naturerlebnispark Panarbora" in Waldbröl.
In Engelskirchen you will also find - of course and logically =,o) the first German Engels Museum in the premises of the old Engels spinning mill in Engelskirchen. The company Ermen und Engels, from which Friedrich Engels, no less famous for his collaboration with Karl Marx, emerged, came from Barmen / Wuppertal in the 1930s. The premises of the old spinning mill, which today house the local administration, the fire brigade, the police and the industrial museum of the LVR (Landschaftsverband Rheinland - Rhineland Regional Council), are also home to the 1st German Engels Museum in the factory's "Old Locksmith's Shop".

They live in "Grandma's little holiday home" - my parents' house, which my family first rented in August 1974. After my father's death in 1983, my mother bought the property and has since continuously renovated the house, which was originally built in 1928, along with the garden. The last major energy/thermal and electrical/electronic renovation took place from June 2020 to 05-2021. Originally, the house "only" had the surrounding and enclosed plot of around 1000m2, then in the early 2010s the northern part with around 2700m2 was added, which was also completely enclosed and replanted in the course of the major renovation in 2020. I myself lived in this house until I moved out in 1993 - almost 20 years. During this time, a lot of technical changes have been made to the house, but the furniture is "almost" as it was back then. I now live with my family in the Holledau ( = Hallertau - where the good hops come from) in Lower Bavaria, am a self-employed businessman and owner of an event and advertising agency. Due to my many business trips, especially to the Rhine/Ruhr metropolitan region, I was naturally also often at home "with my mother", until she unfortunately passed away far too early in February 2020. Not least because of these many visits home and the still close family and friendly contacts to the "Bergische", the house and garden / the region itself and of course the people living there have a firm place in my heart. I gladly entrust this to you and I would be very happy if you feel as comfortable in my parents' house as I did myself - that is, most of the time =,o)! Best regards and a great and relaxing stay in my / your "grandma's holiday cottage"! Mainburg in June 2021, Joachim Remmel
