Situated 32km/20mi east of Faro, Tavira is one of the most beautiful towns in the Algarve and a clear winner if you are looking for a base in the Eastern Algarve. The town straddles the broad Rio Gilão, a tidal estuary which is overlooked by balconied houses and traversed by two low bridges, one of Roman origin. Despite ever increasing visitor numbers and ongoing development, Tavira still makes a living as a fishing port, an industry attested to by the many fine seafood restaurants along the palm-lined river.
For the sun-worshipper, the superb white beaches of Ilha da Tavira, reachable year-round by ferry or water-taxi, offer the ultimate in just lounging around. The sleepy neighbouring village of Santa Luzia offers more excellent seafood while the magnificent Barril beach at western end of Ilha da Tavira, reached by a rickety old train beloved of young and old alike, is opposite the holiday village of Pedras del Rei – and if you venture a little west of the busy tourist area at the island “train station” you will come to one of the Algarve’s most beautiful nudist beaches. Beside the “train station”, you have the remarkable “anchor graveyard”, a relic of the days when Barril was a major centre for tuna fishing. Much of the coastal area around Tavira has been turned into a nature park, the Ria Formosa nature reserve, where you can go bird-watching or sunbathing – or just plain wander in a charming, relaxed, rustic environment. For more info, see
Going east toward the Spanish border (Spain is only 22km/15mi from Tavira and there are no passport formalities), you come to several more excellent beaches, including Manta Rota and Monte Gordo; Cacelha Velha and Fabrica are well worth a stop en route. The Ria Guadiana forms the border between Spain and Portugal. The river town of Villa Real do Santo Antonio is renowned for its many shops offering a fantastic variety of house wares. Following the river north, there is a scenic route which takes you to the fortified towns of Castro Marim, Alcoutim, Mertola, etc. For the more adventurous, the sophisticated shopping, the bull ring and the equestrian activities of Seville are perhaps an hour and a half’s drive from Tavira on the excellent, recently completed motorway.
Five or six golf courses lie within a 15 to 20 minute drive of Tavira – including Quinta da Cima, rated as the best course in Portugal in 2004 by the authoritative “PEUGEOT Guide”. Within an hour you can reach almost all of the well known Algarve courses – plus Islantilla and Isla da Canela just over the border in Spain. Click on “Golf Breaks” above to see links to many of the courses and what we can offer in the way of concessionary green fees, etc.
Tavira Garden is located on the N125 main road which connects Faro to Villa Real on the Spanish border. It is close to the town centre and is easy to find. It is well known to the taxi drivers at Faro airport – a taxi ride takes ~30 minutes and costs ~€40/£30 (maybe a little less, maybe a little more – it depends on time of day, Nº of passengers, bags, public holiday, traffic, etc). Tavira Garden is easy to find from the motorway exit for those who rent a car at Faro airport – or face the long drive from UK, France, Benelux, etc!

Tavira Garden is located in Tavira on the N125 main road which connects Faro to Villa Real do Santo Antonio on the Spanish border via Tavira. It is close to the town centre and is easy to find; the Tavira exit from the A22 motorway leads directly to the N125 close to where Tavira Garden is located. It is also well known to the taxi drivers at Faro airport; a taxi ride takes ~30 minutes and costs ~€40/£30 (maybe a little less, maybe a little more – it depends on Nº of passengers, bags, time of day, public holiday, traffic, etc).
Tavira Garden was developed over an approx 10 year period from the mid 90’s. The final buildings were finished only in the last couple of years. Conceived by a group of Swedish investors, the complex stands stark white and commanding on a low hill in the suburbs of Tavira. The architecture is an expressionist rendition of the medieval Moorish style. The lush, mature gardens boast an impressive array of palm trees, carob trees and ancient olive trees, set off by lovingly tended shrubs and flowers.
The complex favours families and those seeking a relaxing location from which to enjoy the sun, sand and sights of the Algarve – or the magnificent golf courses, hills and countryside! Those seeking disco bars and lager louts will be sorely disappointed – not only in the complex but also in the town itself!
There are approx 160 apartments (mostly 1- or 2-bedroomed) in total. The clientele is a polyglot mix of Scandinavians, English, Irish, French, Dutch and Germans – and, of course, many Portuguese and Spaniards. English is, however, very much the business language of Tavira Garden and of the Algarve as a whole (Spanish, French and German are strong runners also). See photos on
Four pools – 2 x adult and 2 x children – offer entertainment for adults and children alike. For the more energetic, there is a comprehensively equipped gym (with a personal trainer for the masochists!) and a tennis court; a boules court offers a more genteel alternative. A bar and restaurant (limited opening in off-season) ensures convenient wining and dining while a readily available and inexpensive (~€4/£3 within the urban area) taxi service permits easy, safe access to the many fine restaurants of the town even if you enjoy a glass of wine. Car rental is available on the complex (airport/apartment pick-up and/or drop-off) but many visitors opt to walk or taxi most of the time and perhaps to rent a car for a few days to visit Seville or to explore the Guadiana valley. Bicycle hire is available in town.
Tavira , Algarve , Portugal
Founded ~400BC, Tavira was an important centre for North African trade until the great earthquake of 1775 which devastated the entire Portuguese Atlantic coast (relax, these earthquakes normally occur only once every 500 years or so – you have time!). All was rebuilt with graceful mansions and townhouses, many with fine stone doorways emblazoned with armorial crests – today these line the narrow streets of the old town.
From the arcaded Praça da República by the Roman bridge, you climb Rua da Galeria to the Igrejia da Misericórdia in the heart of the old town. Dating from 1541, this has a fine stone doorway decorated with lute-playing figures who are serenading mermaids, angels and saints; inside, below a vaulted wooden ceiling, you find striking “azulejo” (blue ceramic tile) scenes from the Life of Christ. Two hundred meters further along is the old Castelo, a fort which changed hands several times between the Moors and the Christians 800 to 1000 years ago. Next to the Castelo is the old whitewashed church of Santa Maria. Built on the site of an old mosque, this contains the tomb of Dom Paio Peres Correia who drove the Moors from the Algarve in 1242. In the “new” town, the tranquil palm gardens offer an opportunity to relax or simply to wander. Next to the gardens is the old market, now a bustling cultural and crafts centre; opposite is an array of fish restaurants and souvenir shops. Continuing along the river, you pass the many traditional fishing boats lying on the tidal river-bed and come to the modern market – this is no architectural masterpiece but it offers a golden opportunity to view the astonishing variety of Atlantic and Mediterranean fish available in the Algarve.
Tavira is well served with rail and bus links but its many one-way and pedestrianised streets are designed to deter the motorist – as a result, several bike rental shops thrive. Bikes are an excellent for exploring the neighbouring beaches or the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve. For more info, go to or to or to
