Following the footsteps of history
The old town offers a number of sights that you can reach on foot from your private holiday home or apartment in Trento. Start your tour of the historic center at the cathedral square. With the Neptune fountain behind you, you can see the impressive Palazzo Pretorio, the former bishop's residence of the city. To the right of it stands the Cathedral of San Vigilio, consecrated in 1145, where the most important meetings of the Council of Trent took place between 1545 and 1563. The façade shows the transition from the Lombard-Romanesque style to the Gothic. Other churches in the city center include S. Lorenzo from the 12th century and the Church of S. Maria Maggiore, built in 1520 in the Renaissance style and, alongside the cathedral, served as a meeting place for the Council. The old town is characterized by numerous palaces, also with Renaissance-style façades. North of the old town is the imposing Castello del Buonconsiglio, the former seat of the prince-bishops. The oldest parts of the complex date back to the early Middle Ages. During the Napoleonic period, the castle was plundered. Later, the Austrians used the complex as a barracks. Gourmet region Trentino-South Tyrol
The South Tyrol-Trentino region is a true paradise for gourmets and wine lovers. When people think of Italy, they often think of pasta and pizza, but in the north of the country, polenta made from cornmeal and dumplings made from buckwheat flour are more popular. The Alpine region is famous for its sausages and cheeses. Famous varieties include Trentingrana, Vezzena, and Spressa delle Giudicarie. And there is still real alpine cheese. Try the Mortadella from Nonstal or the Carne Salada for sausages. The most famous wine here is the Teroldego Rotaliano from the same-named growing area, where the rivers Adige and Noce meet. The autochthonous (native) grape variety produces fruity and low-tannin red wines. In aroma, the Teroldego brings a slight bitter note despite its intense fruit bouquet. Around your holiday home or apartment in Trento and its surroundings, you will find numerous restaurants from cheap to elegant and for every taste.
