Split is the second-largest city in Dalmatia. It has great significance as a port city and as a religious and cultural center. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is located in the southern part of the Split peninsula. The most important building here is the Diocletian's Palace with the Golden Gate. It was built for the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 300 AD. In the palace grounds, you will find an ancient columned courtyard, a vestibule, several gates as access to the city, and a Jupiter temple. A medieval city extension adjoins the Diocletian Palace. Other historical buildings in the old town include the Cathedral of Sveti Duje with its impressive bell tower, the old town hall, the Diocletian aqueduct, and the fortress Gripe. The city has numerous churches and monasteries, which can also be visited from the inside. Outside Split, wonderful landscapes await you on the mainland. Take an excursion to Plitvice Lakes National Park or to Croatian National Park Krka between Knin and Skradin.
One of the most beautiful excursion destinations for your holiday in Croatia is the Blue Cave on the island of Biševo. In calm weather and sunshine, the water in this cave is bathed in a mysterious blue light. There are more caves on the island that can be reached from the water, although they are not as romantic as the Blue Cave. In good weather when it is not too hot, take a trip from your holiday home accommodation to Biokovo Nature Park. It is home to the highest mountain range in Central Dalmatia, rising over 1500 meters above sea level, close to the sea. You can hike and cycle here. The highest peak is Sv. Jure at 1758 meters. In Podstrana, the beach is particularly beautiful and expansive. This place is not far from Split and always worth a visit. If possible, book an apartment with a sea view for your holiday with a pool in Split. You can enjoy a fantastic view of the island of Brač from your window. A rarity in terms of history awaits you in the Museum of Sacred Art - here, the valuable Split Gospel Book is stored.
In a comfortable beach apartment, your family can relax wonderfully. Choose accommodation that allows for short distances. Close to the harbor, it is not far to reach the boats to the offshore islands. A nice day trip to Brač or Trogir brings variety to your time on the Dalmatian coast. Croatia is extremely family-friendly. You can move around with your children freely and receive great offers for playing and participating everywhere. Book a holiday home with free Wi-Fi if you need an internet connection. A pool is very convenient as you can swim in it anytime, regardless of the sea's waves. Activities include water sports, Jeep safaris, and rafting. You can hike or take a diving course. In the marina, sailing and motorboats can moor and rent if available. Boat tours along the coast and to the popular small islands and grottos also start here.
In Split itself, you will find many hospitable restaurants and eateries near your accommodation. On the beach, you can sit with your feet in the sand and enjoy the tasty food and drinks of the taverns in peace. Croatian cuisine is heavily influenced by Italy. Mediterranean dishes with fish, seafood, and lots of vegetables can be found on every menu and are deliciously prepared. Take a trip to Omiš or the Makarska Riviera to taste the local specialties. Dubrovnik and Zadar also offer fine delicacies. Perhaps you would like to try black squid ink risotto or fresh homemade ribbon noodles. In addition to fish, shrimp, and mussels, you can also order tender meat from lamb, kid, or poultry here. If you want the dishes to be cooked slowly using traditional methods under charcoal embers, it is worth pre-ordering. The cooking times with the Peka can easily take around two hours. Treat yourself to an aromatic wine to accompany fish and meat - Croatia has much to offer in this area as well.
The city of Split has many events and exhibitions to offer its visitors. Numerous architectural monuments, such as the already mentioned ancient temples and churches, bear witness to its varied history. The Croatian National Theater is based in Split, next to the remains of a Venetian fortress. It performs classical dramas, ballet, and opera. Chamber concerts complete the program. The Hajduk Split football club is housed in the Poljud Stadium. Numerous museums exhibit displays on nature, history, and technology. The Archaeological Museum exhibits finds from excavations throughout Dalmatia. There is a museum of fine arts and several galleries. In the Meštrović Gallery, the 8.3-meter-high statue of Bishop Gregory of Nin (Grgur Ninski) is a sight worth seeing. It is said to bring good luck to stroke the big toe of this statue - that's why it is polished shiny. Check your travel guide for when the folk festivals and parades take place on holy days. Maybe a procession goes right past the window of your inexpensive holiday apartment.
You can travel comfortably to your accommodation in the holiday apartment or private holiday home in Split by private vehicle, train, bus, or airplane. Ferry connections also serve links to Italy and other towns in Croatia. For travel to the accommodation by plane, it is best to use Split Airport near Trogir, which offers international connections. To get from here to your holiday apartment, rent a taxi or take one of the public buses. Trains to Split operate from practically all over Europe. The trip to Croatia can be covered in a fairly short time when using a comfortable coach bus. If you are traveling to your apartment with your car, it is best to travel from the north via Austria and Slovenia or take the motorway to Italy and then cross by ferry. In addition to consumption costs, you should also budget for fees for road use in Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia.
