The Danish island has a total of eleven villages: Juvre, Toftum, Bolilmark, Lakolk, Kongsmark, Kirkeby, Vraby, Østerby, Mølby, Sønderby, and Havneby. Their attractions reflect the turbulent history of Rømø, which was divided several times between Germany and Denmark. With whaling in the 17th and 18th centuries, Rømø experienced immense economic growth, which it quickly squandered due to the excessive hunting of whales and the resulting extinction of the North Atlantic right whale and decimation of other whale species. Embark on a journey to discover the historical traces and explore Rømø's exciting attractions. This includes the listed whalebone fence from 1772, which you can find in Juvre. In Kongsmark, on the other hand, you will encounter a large number of whale skull bones. In the Rømø Church (Clemens Church) built in 1200, dedicated to Saint Clemens, the patron saint of sailors, you will find precious votive ships. The so-called commander stones on the church cemetery are also worth seeing. These are the gravestones of captains who became wealthy through whaling. Rømø also bears deep scars from World War II. Here lie several bunkers of the German Wehrmacht from World War II, where the Naturcenter Tønnisgård offers interesting guided tours.
The main attractions of the island are its overwhelming beaches amidst a varied nature. The Havsand in the south of the island, together with the Juvre Sand in the north, forms the largest sandy beach in Northern Europe. At low tide, you have a four-kilometer-wide beach of the finest golden sand. Curiously, the beach is open to camping cars and cars, earning it the nickname "Europe's largest parking lot." A popular attraction on Rømø is the Nationalmuseet Kommandørgården, a branch of the National Museum in Toftum. The museum is located in the old manor house where Rømø's district head resided in the 18th century. Here you can learn all about the history of the island and the traditions of its inhabitants and see beautiful exhibits from the whaling era. Right next door is the Toftum Skole: it is not only the smallest but also the oldest school in the country! A worthwhile excursion destination is the Naturcenter Tønnisgård with its exciting exhibitions about the Wadden Sea and curious exhibits like the bristles of a baleen whale, remains of stranded sperm whales, or a giant piece of amber. Book your bunker tour and mudflat walks here. A tip: In the candle factory in Lakolk, you can make your own candle or buy beautiful Danish handicrafts in the shop. You can also take a day trip to the mainland or Jutland. Visit the national park of the Wadden Sea island and the Wadden Sea Centre in Ribe and enjoy the healthy sea air blowing from the water. Many opportunities for varied excursions await you.
A vacation on a Danish Wadden Sea island – for many, it's primarily a wonderful beach holiday on Rømø. Here, you and your family can relax and engage in sports activities. This is ensured by a large number of well-equipped child-friendly and dog-friendly holiday homes in a beautiful setting. Whether it's a luxury holiday home with a pool or a cozy holiday home with a garden, the island of Rømø offers a wide range of affordable accommodations from private owners. Beautiful holiday homes in the dunes or holiday apartments in beachfront houses with sea views even make up for an occasional rainy day. Take long walks in the Wadden Sea with your family, explore the interior of the island on foot or by bike, and marvel at the quiet diversity of this large region with many opportunities for bird watching. Active beach vacationers will find one of the most famous areas for land sailing, kiting, and buggy kiting in Europe on the broad southern beach. A golf course is available in the south of the island, and numerous riding stables offer horse lovers beautiful rides through the varied landscape of the island. Dog owners are guaranteed a fulfilling holiday with dogs on Rømø, as the island, with its many beautiful and dog-friendly holiday apartments and homes, is a true paradise for dog owners. Almost all beach sections on Rømø are dog-friendly, although leashes are required during the peak season. Frolic extensively with your four-legged friend on the beach, go hiking in the heath or the dunes, or simply laze in the garden of one of the dog-friendly houses. Special "dog forests" and playgrounds for dogs complement the dog-friendly offerings of Rømø Island. Before renting a dog-friendly holiday home on Rømø, such as on the west coast, be sure to inquire about the specific entry regulations with dogs to Denmark!
Do you love "shrimps," the small northern prawns? Then Rømø is the place for you, as Havneby is known as the port with Denmark's largest shrimp fleet. The regional cuisine on the island of Rømø is dominated by fish: smoked or pickled herring, steamed, fried, baked, or smoked plaice, as well as crayfish and shrimps are simply yet deliciously prepared and served in rolls, bread, or with vegetable sides and thick sauces. On Rømø, everything comes fresh from the sea or the land to the plate in the restaurant or in the kitchen of your holiday home. Another specialty of Rømø is lamb dishes from the island's salt marsh lambs. A cool Danish beer goes perfectly with it.
Among the traditional cultural events of the North Sea island is the Jazz Festival, which takes place on the first weekend in June. Vacationers arriving by motorcycle should book an affordable holiday apartment or a holiday home with a pool in time for Pentecost. Then, Rømø hosts an international biker meeting. The Kite Festival, held on the first weekend in September, is particularly atmospheric. Over 1,000 kites then take to the sky, letting everyone dream a little of carefree flying. At the end of July, the beautiful Tonder Folk and Harbor Festival awaits you, which also includes an impressive regatta.
Rømø (German: Römö, Röm) is the largest Danish Wadden Sea island, located right next to the German island of Sylt in the Wadden Sea. It is therefore not surprising that one of the most popular routes is the Rømø-Sylt Line. The car and passenger ferry departs from the seaside resort List on Sylt to the port of Havneby, just nine nautical miles away, in about 45 minutes. Rømø is connected to the mainland by a roughly 10-kilometer-long Rømø Dam (Rømødæmningen) and is thus easily accessible by private car throughout the year. The fastest route is via the A7 or E45 motorway through Neumünster, Rendsburg, and Flensburg, from where you reach the German-Danish border. Take exit 73 Klibley and follow the federal road 179 to Toftlund. Here, switch to the B175, which takes you past Skærbæk to the Rømø Dam. If you prefer public transport, take the German Railway to Niebüll. From there, the Danish State Railways will take you to Skærbæk – a journey of about three and a half hours from Hamburg. In Skærbæk, bus line 285 awaits you and takes you to all destinations on the island. The journey takes between 10 and 40 minutes depending on your final destination. Enjoy your relaxing stay with your own holiday accommodation at an affordable price in one of Northern Europe's most beautiful regions.
