Centrally located in the middle of the island, a vacation rental, apartment, or holiday home on the West Beach in Tinnum is the ideal place to explore Sylt. Tinnum is very close to Westerland and is therefore referred to by locals as the bridge between village and town. The best way to explore the highlights of Tinnum is on foot or by bike. Tinnum was first mentioned in 1440, and from 1547 to 1868, the village was the seat of the Sylt land bailiffs. One of the oldest houses on Sylt is the Landvogtei, built in 1649. From here, the land bailiffs long determined the history of the North Sea island. From your accommodation, the charming Frisian houses from the 18th and 19th centuries are quickly accessible. South of Tinnum, the Tinnum Meadows stretch to the Rantum Basin. The well-maintained paths along the dike are ideal for cyclists, Nordic walkers, and walkers. In this beautiful paradise, you'll quickly forget that you're visiting an island. The miles-long fine sandy West Beach is just a few minutes away from your centrally located apartment. Here, you can swim and relax against the breathtaking backdrop of untouched dune landscapes. Regardless of the tide, the surf waves excite kite and windsurfers. Beach chairs are now available for children as well. During a romantic beach walk, everyday worries are quickly forgotten. The nearby island capital, Westerland, offers excellent shopping and nightlife opportunities. With a bit of luck, you might spot a celebrity while browsing through designer stores and luxury boutiques. You can also rent a bike and explore the landscape and idyll from the saddle or take walks and excursions to the beach.
Whether the charming Tinnum, the fashionable Westerland, or the beautiful Wenningstedt south of Kampen, the North Frisian island is the perfect vacation destination at any time of year. The invigorating climate of the North Sea, 40 kilometers of sandy beach, the tranquil Wadden Sea, and a unique landscape rightly make Sylt the queen of the North Frisian islands. In addition to numerous cafes, bars, and restaurants, there are various sports offerings such as golf, horseback riding, tennis, wellness and bathing facilities, beach parties, concerts, and sports and cultural events. These include, for example, the Kampen Literature Summer, the Gourmet Festival in January, and the Surf World Cup. Westerland has been a recognized spa town since 1949 and is the largest of the twelve Sylt localities. Here and in the beautiful towns of Westerland, Keitum, Rantum, and Kampen, a casino, a spa center, a large aquarium, and many shopping opportunities await you. In the Keitum Local History Museum, you are transported back to a time when people lived from whaling and agriculture. Rent a cozy vacation rental or an apartment with a garden right on the beach, with a pond and garden tailored to your personal wishes, and experience the dream of pure idyll and tranquility during your stay. The atmosphere in the region is unique!
Many of the houses and vacation apartments on the beach, such as in the Liiger Hörn district, are excellently suited for a family-friendly vacation or a vacation with dogs. Numerous apartments for families are equipped with Wi-Fi, so you can supply friends and family members with beautiful photos of your vacation. Boredom is a foreign word in Tinnum. On exploration tours on foot or by bike, you can admire the beauties of nature. Your little ones love riding pedal boats and building sandcastles, while you relax in the beach chair at the guarded beaches of Westerland. During the summer months, a wide range of sports and entertainment programs is available to ensure a successful change of pace. In the Tinnum Zoo, you can observe over 400 native and exotic residents on two and four legs. In the spacious, well-maintained facility, there is also a large bouncy castle, a carousel, and a playground. The zoo is open from May to October. The native animals, such as deer, stags, sheep, donkeys, ponies, storks, and guinea pigs, are just as fascinating as the flamingos, parrots, and alpacas. In the petting zoo, many animals like to be petted, and feeding is explicitly allowed. Relaxation and fun for the whole family are offered by the Sylter Welle in Westerland. With a fantastic view of the North Sea and nestled in dunes, the adventure pool awaits you with an attractive offer. With over 1,000 square meters, you and your kids can splash, swim, and slide to your heart's content. There are even bouncy castles here. The seven saunas invite you to linger and relax. As you can see, an apartment or a house on Sylt's West Beach is excellently suited for a vacation with children. No matter the weather, there are suitable leisure activities for every age group. Whether kids or pets, every family is warmly welcome on Sylt.
Sylt, with its five Michelin stars, is a paradise of stars. As is typical for a seaside vacation, seafood is everywhere a hit. Sylter Royal oysters, shrimp, mussels, and plaice mostly come from the region. Anglerfish, wild duck, and marsh lamb, as well as red fruit jelly for dessert, are found on most menus. Typical for the region are the wooden stands in the dunes, which offer a wide culinary spectrum in a rustic ambiance near the beach. The range of restaurants is so broad that you are sure to find something suitable. If you want to surprise your loved ones in your affordable vacation apartment or private holiday home with regional dishes, try serving shrimp bread, shrimp soup, or a shrimp sandwich. In May and June, young herring are caught, which are then stored in sea salt for five months. They are usually eaten with green beans and boiled potatoes. From September to April, it's the mussels' turn, harvested in the Wadden Sea. They taste best with a white wine or vegetable broth. On cool days, we recommend a Pharisäer. This coffee with a cream topping and a shot of rum tastes delicious and warms wonderfully.
Like many other places here, Tinnum boasts a vibrant and eventful history. A particularly special attraction is the Tinnumburg, the best-preserved of the three Sylt castles. The Rantum Castle was buried under dunes, and the Archsum Castle was destroyed. Tinnumburg is a former ring wall fortification. Today, archaeologists interpret the circular walls as Germanic cult sites. While the Archsum Castle was destroyed and the Rantum Castle lies buried under dunes, it is the best-preserved of the three Sylt castles. Tinnum Castle was built around the time of Christ's birth and is located in the midst of the Tinnum Meadows. With its eight-meter-high circular wall and a diameter of 120 meters, it is visible from afar. Before the marsh was diked in 1938, the castle protruded island-like from the water during storm surges. Back then, it likely served as a refuge and Germanic cult site. Today, it is freely accessible and definitely worth a visit. Also worth seeing is the thatched "Old Landvogtei," whose history goes back several centuries. It is located on Tinnum Street and is a private building, so it can only be viewed from the outside. Sylt-East was a municipality in Schleswig-Holstein, which existed from 1970 to 2008. In 2008, it merged with the town of Westerland to form the new municipality of Sylt, creating the most tourist-heavy municipality on the North Sea island. Regular festivals are held here, to which guests are warmly welcomed.
You can easily and quickly reach your peaceful vacation apartment or holiday home in Tinnum on the island of Sylt by car or airplane. The journey to the North Sea island is an exciting experience in itself. While some prefer flying, others swear by the relaxing glide over the Hindenburg Dam. Yet others love crossing by ferry. The RDC Autozug Sylt and the Sylt Shuttle, as well as the passenger train, use the Hindenburg Dam, which has connected the mainland to Sylt since 1927. By plane, you can reach Sylt from many German airports in less than two hours. From there, you can take a taxi or public transport to your accommodation. Book a cozy vacation rental or an apartment with a garden now and enjoy idyllic excursions and walks along the miles-long beach, starting from a location that suits your personal preferences. The Nordic atmosphere here is unique!
