Already at the time of the Romans, the area around your holiday home in Platja d'Aro was inhabited. Excavations at Vila de Pla de Palol uncovered Roman ruins from the 1st to the 4th century A.D. Here, nearly 2,000-year-old courtyards and remains of Roman villas can be visited. The Castle d'Aro in the old town of Castell d'Aro dates back to the Middle Ages. The church is from the 16th and 18th century. The neighboring town of Sant Feliu de Guíxols is famous for its many Art Nouveau villas. Not only art lovers should not miss a trip to the Dalí Museum in Cadaqués and the Teatre-Museu Dalí in Figueres. These are the former residence in the former fishing village of Cadaqués and a theater converted into a museum by Dalí himself. One of the highlights of the exhibition is the sculpture of the Regentaxis, in the interior of which it rains.
The municipality consists of the three districts Castell d'Aro, Platja d'Aro, and s'Agaró, whereby Platja d'Aro was once a small fishing settlement. Today, one of the largest marinas on the Spanish coast is located here. The main beach Platja Gran is two kilometers long and is located directly in the town center. It slopes gently into the sea and is suitable for small children. To the north and south, the coastal hiking trail Cami de Ronda leads, over which numerous small bays and beaches can be reached on foot. For children, there is the Aquadiver water park at the resort, and the car-free beach promenade is perfect for strolling and eating in the evening. Those who want to avoid the well-attended beaches, especially in the summer months, can book a holiday with a pool in the Baix Empordà.
The cuisine of the Costa Brava is a mixture of the traditional cuisine of fishermen and that of farmers and shepherds. Mar i muntanya - mountain and sea - is the result of this liaison. On the menus of restaurants, you will find fish alongside meat and seafood alongside snails. However, due to overfishing, fish rarely comes from local waters anymore. Fish from the Mediterranean is rare and expensive. Typical for the region is arroz negre, rice with squid in its own ink, and Suquet de Peix, a simple grilled or fried fish skewer. From the land come tasty dishes of lamb, chicken, kid, and snails (caraoles). The most famous wines of the region are sparkling wines made using the traditional champagne method in bottle fermentation (Cava). Gourmets can enjoy numerous top-class restaurants in the province of Girona (also in terms of the wallet). Depending on the year, between 10 and 20 star restaurants with as many Michelin stars are playful in the province of Girona.
