The city center of Dresden captivates with numerous historic buildings and significant museums such as the Zwinger and the Old Masters Picture Gallery, just to name the absolute highlights. Due to its characteristic architecture, outstanding art collections, and mild climate, Dresden is also known as "Elbflorenz" (Florence of the Elbe). It is noteworthy that a large part of the historic buildings were destroyed during World War II and later reconstructed. This includes the Frauenkirche at Dresden's Neumarkt, a Baroque Protestant church and one of the city's landmarks. The church was rebuilt starting in the 1990s, with work continuing until 2005. Also worth mentioning is the Semperoper, one of Germany's most important opera buildings, as well as the Royal Palace. Those visiting Dresden during the Christmas season can look forward to the Striezelmarkt, founded in 1434, one of the most traditional Christmas markets in Germany.
Clearly, the cultural highlight of Dresden, alongside a visit to the Zwinger and the Old Masters Picture Gallery, is a visit to the unique Semperoper, which is operated by the Saxon State Opera. The building is among those reconstructed after World War II. From 1977 to 1985, the building was reconstructed according to original plans by Gottfried Semper in the style of Historicism or Classicism. The opera house is closely associated with the composer Richard Strauss, who premiered nine of his works in the city. Impressive inside is the large ornamental curtain — originally designed by Ferdinand Keller. It weighs 400 kilograms and measures 17 by 12 meters. The curtain is made of Belgian linen. Each year, more than a quarter of a million visitors attend the Semperoper.
Dresden and its surroundings offer fun activities for the whole family. A special experience is the roller coaster restaurant Schwerelos. What's unusual is the way the food and drinks are delivered to the table — via a complex system of roller coaster tracks. Yet, the food always arrives at the right table. The Transportation Museum in Dresden presents an exhibition on the history of transportation — but in an entertaining, interactive, and exciting way. On display are cars, ships, airplanes, and trains. The Museum of Saxon Folk Art offers a magical experience with a collection of historical marionettes. Then there's the Dresden Zoo, where you can admire cute koalas, among other animals. Not to forget the beautiful Elbe Valley — just right for a vacation with your dog in Dresden and its surroundings. Close to your vacation home, there's plenty of space to roam in nature.
Admittedly, Saxony is not exactly known for its haute cuisine. However, Dresden is a cosmopolitan city, and here you will find restaurants offering a variety of culinary traditions, from hearty traditional fare to creative cuisine. In the Äußere Neustadt, a well-preserved district from the Gründerzeit era by Dresden standards, you will find about 175 restaurants, pubs, cafes, wine taverns, inns, and snack bars. The Äußere Neustadt is Dresden's trendy and nightlife district. The city's specialties are mostly sweet in nature. The most famous is probably the Dresden Stollen (also known as Christstollen or Christmas Stollen). Since 2010, it has been a protected designation of origin from Dresden and its surroundings (including other towns like Pirna, Radebeul, Coswig, and Heidenau). The law states that the stollen must not be baked in molds. Artificial flavors and preservatives are strictly prohibited. Besides the stollen, the Eierschecke, a sheet cake made from yeast dough with apples, poppy seeds, and quark, is another original sweet temptation from Dresden.
Dresden is a true art metropolis. More than 50 museums and over 30 theaters, operas, and small art stages, as well as a philharmonic, attract art and culture enthusiasts to the city. The largest collections belong to the Dresden State Art Collections (SKD) with exhibition spaces in the Royal Palace and the Zwinger. Since 1855, the Old Masters Picture Gallery has been located in the Semper Building of the Dresden Zwinger. In addition to works by Rubens, Rembrandt, and the Venetian Canaletto, the gallery displays Raphael's Sistine Madonna, a masterpiece comparable only to those created by Leonardo da Vinci. The New Masters Gallery presents works by artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, Otto Dix, and Max Liebermann. Many of the New Masters were active at the Dresden Academy of Art or painted motifs from the surrounding area. The gallery brings together different art movements such as Romanticism, Impressionism, and Expressionism. Among the newer museums are the German Hygiene Museum and the Military History Museum of the Bundeswehr, designed by star architect Daniel Libeskind.
