How do I come to Bolsena?

Over ancient Roman roads to Lazio

The small town of Bolsena is located in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio on the shores of Lake Bolsena. You can reach your private holiday apartment in Bolsena via the nearest train station in Montefiascone. By car, follow the Autostrada A1 to the Orvieto exit and the regional road SR2, which corresponds to the ancient Via Cassia between Rome and Florence, to your holiday accommodation in Bolsena. Lazio has a mild Mediterranean climate. Summers are warm and dry. In July and August, temperatures can rise to over 35 °C during the day. The cuisine in Lazio and the Eternal City of Rome is hearty, down-to-earth, and often based on cucina povera, the cuisine of the common people. Gnocchi all'Amatriciana is based on pork cheek bacon and Pecorino Romano, Spaghetti alla Carbonara on belly bacon, sheep's cheese, and egg. Oxtail soup is also widespread. The legend of Saint Christina

Visit the church(es) of Saint Christina in Bolsena. The three churches date from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Inside, you can descend into an early Christian catacomb. On one of the altar slabs, you can see bloodstains that are said to have dripped from a host in 1263. Saint Christina is said to have been buried in the catacombs. Her alleged sarcophagus and a slab with her footprints are kept in the church. The view of the town is dominated by the medieval castle Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara. Inside the castle is the Regional Museum Museo Territoriale del Lago di Bolsena with Etruscan, Roman, and medieval artifacts. Below the castle is the 16th-century Palazzo Crispi-Cozza-Del Drago. Inside, you can see a fresco cycle from the time of Mannerism. At Piazza del Mercatello, there are ancient ruins of villas, baths, and an amphitheater of the Roman city of Volsinii Novi.
