Worth a trip

We felt very comfortable in the cozy house with plenty of space for everyone. It was a pleasure to sit at the large table with a view of the beautiful garden, rich in animals and with a display of clouds that only winter can conjure. Being in a private accommodation makes for a pleasant difference compared to hotels and standard apartments. The straightforward, friendly, and accommodating communication is the icing on the cake for any trip.

The main attraction of Ameland is the miles-long sandy beach backed by dunes. From the harbor, seal and mussel trips to sandbanks are available. In Hollum, the largest town on the island, stands the Ameland Lighthouse, visible from almost every corner of the island and a popular excursion destination. The entire island is suitable for walks along the beach and through the dunes and meadows. By the way: dogs are allowed on the entire beach – perfect for a holiday with your dog on Ameland. Throughout the year, numerous events take place: from the Beach Rugby Festival in June, the Rye Festival in Nes in August, to the Art Month across the entire island in November. The small beachcomber museums, found on all the West Frisian Islands, are particularly fascinating.

Where can I eat out in Ballum?

Matjes, Bitterballen, and Lekkerbek

The West Frisian Islands are not exactly a pilgrimage site for gourmets. However, Dutch cuisine, especially in cities and holiday regions along the coast, has improved significantly in recent years. Previously, fries, Bitterballen (stuffed croquettes), and Lekkerbek (fried cod) were ubiquitous, but the restaurants near your affordable holiday apartment or private holiday home in Ballum offer a wider variety – focusing on the island's offerings: fresh mussels, fish from the North and Wadden Seas, shrimp, salt marsh lamb, and cheese. However, lamb and fish dishes are pricey in the Netherlands. In the casual Eetcafés, the food is more affordable, though simpler. On Texel, the largest of the West Frisian Islands, even local beer is brewed. By the way: the real Matjes sandwiches are made with young herring, available only in May and June. During the rest of the year, the fish come from the freezer. Self-caterers will find two large supermarkets in Buren and Hollum, as well as a few small shops with everything needed for cooking in your own accommodation.

How do I come to Ballum?

Head to the West Frisian Islands

The quaint village of Ballum is idyllically situated on the western side of the West Frisian Island of Ameland, off the Dutch coast between the North Sea and the Wadden Sea. You can easily reach your holiday apartment or private holiday home on Ameland by car. From the Ruhr area and the Cologne region, it takes about four hours to the ferry in Holwerd in Friesland. You can either take the A3 motorway and then the Dutch A12 and A32 motorways towards Ijsselmeer, or take the A32 north and from Meppen head to the Dutch coast. From Bremen, the route goes through Leer in East Frisia and Groningen. The ferry ride through the Wadden Sea channels to Ameland takes about 45 minutes. From the port in Nes, it is about two kilometers to your accommodation in Ballum.
