Location and surroundings of object

It is far away from the thoroughfares very remote and even many Toscaner were never there even if it all because of the reservoir and the sunken village know.

Today it is not so far away as it was just a few years ago because the roads were developed very well, but the mentality is very similar to that of islanders. As a native islander that suits me very much.

Small villages very remote, where all know everything about the last 10 generations, of course, advantages and disadvantages.

The biggest disadvantage for me personally is that I do not understand a word. It has kept its own dialect which has not much to do with the Italian. I always stand as something mediocre there when I do not understand despite repeated questions about what it is. Of course, I have the foreigner bonus and many are always surprised how well I speak and understand Italian (if I find someone who speaks to me). At the beginning I always said: Sure, I live and work here for over 20 years. Mitlerweile I do not announce it anymore :)

A few words about the village and the surrounding area:

The municipality, made up of three villages (Vagli Sopra, Vagli Sotto and Roggio), is today known for its marble quarrying or reservoirs; it is the largest reservoir in Tuscany. It is very impressive when you see for the first time the big dam and the lake, which is up to 90 m deep. Surrounded by wooded mountains lies the old wild and romantic village of Vagli Sotto on the peninsula. There are several hiking trails (from easy to extremely difficult) around the three small villages and also from Campocatini.

Campocatino is located at 1000m and from Vagli Sopra there is a hiking trail suitable for families with children. Campocatino used to be the summer the Schaafsweide. In addition, potatoes were grown on the terraces. Today it is a destination, many of the old huts are renovated.

Anyone who has experience can go from Vagli to Sumbra or Tambura to name but two.

If you have walked enough you can swim in the lake, I personally do not dare to swim near the dam, where the lake is 90 m deep and the sunken village is rather bathing on the side below the swimming pool. If you do not like bathing in the lake, you can go to the swimming pool, it does not cost entry. You only have to pay for the beach chairs.

Needless to say that you eat here above, right? Classic Tuscan fare at very low prices. The area is known for cheese, ham, salami and ricotta. In addition, there is an excellent potato bread and spelled: in summer as a salad in winter as a stew.

The mountain chain of the Apuan Alps is geologically integrated into the mountain range of the Apennines. The Apennines are a mountain range that is 1500 km long and runs all over Italy, but maybe a few more. Maybe only so much: the two mountain ranges are very different. While the Apuan Alps, with its rugged and rocky mountains, are of a high mountain nature, the Tuscan part of the Apennines is characterized by meadows and forests and large (high) plains.
The Apuan Alps are Tuscan through and through
The Garfagnana is the hilly to mountainous area north of Lucca.

A sleepy area away from (mass) tourism Peace and nature also offers, as in all of Tuscany, many small medieval villages and towns that can be explored. There is much to see and do.

I love this area very much and mediate here so many holiday rentals. Anyone who follows me on my Facebook page or Istagram (both tuscanyexclusive) knows that I'm in Garfagnana almost every weekend and gets a little insight with photos around the year.

I'm just putting together a few sightseeing and recreational opportunities.

The sea you need after where you are in the Garfagnana is between 45 minutes and hours. However, there are many alternative bathing options here.

Many rivers are great for swimming and often you find very romantic places where you are all alone.

There are several lakes where you can swim and often fish.

The largest of the reservoirs is the Lago di Vagli (there are many recreational opportunities such as the opportunity to swoop down the mountain on a steel cable) and the Lago di Gramolazzo (Minucciano) is great because you are there on the beach, rent pedal boats, barbecue , which can use sports equipment next to the lake and much more.

Vicaglia (Sillano) is the highest reservoir and there is a very easy to walk trail.

Isola Santa (Careggine) is along the road from Castelnuovo to Camaiore (sea) and here too you can walk part of the way around the lake or drink in the old village of Caffe '.

In Villa (Pieve Fosciana) is another small reservoir for swimming and fishing

Further down in the valley are the lakes Trombacco (Fabbriche di Vergemoli) and Gioviano (Borgo a Mozzano)

castles:

there are also castles but they are actually already in the Lunigiana in the province of Massa and Carrara and thus something outside the Garfagnana which belongs to the province of Lucca.

Especially with children is the Fortezza di Verrucole (San Romano) worth seeing. It has been turned into a small museum in recent years and you can see how life used to be there.

In Castelnuovo, the Fortezza di Mont'Alfonso and the Rocca Ariostea are worth seeing.

Also the Rocca di Castiglione (Castiglione di Garfagnana) and the Rocca Estense (Camporgiano)

The big cave "Grotta del Vento" offers tours for one, two and three hours.

Sport fans will get their money's worth here.

There are almost infinite many trails on the two mountain ranges Apuan Alps and Apennines. You can go alone or book guided tours. Racing cyclists train here and mountain bike riders have many options.

Courses for paragliding or climbing, quad rafting or quad biking, guided horse riding tours and various climbing parks are just a few activities.

Not to forget that there is also the good Tuscan cuisine. Down to earth like the Tuscan cuisine but always with good ingredients.

There are of course several natural parks (Campocatino, Orecchiella, Orrido di Botri, etc.) museums and hermitages (Eremo di Colomini, Eremo di San Viviano, Pieve of San Cassiano di Controne) and and and
