Dornum in East Frisia
Our holiday home in Dornum is the ideal starting point for a relaxing or action-packed holiday with the whole family.
Explore the "Herrlichkeit Dornum" with a tour of the village in the footsteps of chieftains and pirates.
Info & worth knowing
From the late Middle Ages to modern times, Dornum was a "Herrlichkeit", founded around 1280 by Hero Attena.
Of the three castles originally built, all of which were destroyed in the Saxon feud, two were rebuilt and have survived to the present day.
The first is Beninga Castle, which was built by Olde Hero Attenea between 1375 and 1380.
This later passed to the Beninga family by marriage. Today, the castle is used as a hotel with a tea room and restaurant.
The other is Norderburg, the moated castle built in the 14th century by Olde Hero Attenea.
A secondary school has been located here since 1951. During non-school hours, the castle is used for exhibitions, concerts and knights' festivals, and in winter the Christmas market is held here.
Sights & Places of Interest
St. Batholomäuskirche was built in 1270/90. The burial cellar contains coffins of the chieftains of Dornum.
The organ in this church was built in 1710 by Gerhard von Holy and is considered the second largest in East Frisia. In the summer months you can attend numerous organ concerts here.
Furthermore, the synagogue in Dornum, which was built in 1841 and is the only Jewish place of worship in East Frisia, invites you to visit. It is open to the public and has a permanent exhibition divided into history, culture and religion for its visitors.
The Jewish cemetery is not far from here.
The Oma-Freese-Huus is a typical East Frisian house and was built around 1850.
Here you can see exhibits by Ludwig and Georg Kittel and by Enno Wilhelm Hektor.
In Dornum you will also find the oldest mill in East Frisia, which was built around 1626.
As you can see, Dornum has plenty of leisure activities in store for you.

Contact
Mr. J. Zipzer
Dear guests, After we had been going to Dornum for Christmas for more than 10 years, we had a look at this house at the end of 2001. It was quickly clear that we wanted it. We, that was Brigitte Maligoi and Jörg Zipzer, have turned this house into the Brigitte holiday home in months of weekend work. Mrs Maligoi sold her shares to my wife in 2019, so that the holiday home is now in family ownership. We always try to equip the house as we would expect if we wanted to rent it ourselves. We would be delighted to welcome you as guests in our beautiful holiday home in the near future. Your team from Ferienhaus Brigitte Jennifer Friese-Zipzer and Jörg Zipzer
