Location and surroundings of object
Located in Radicondoli, in the heart of picturesque Tuscany. Radicondoli is a small medieval village, whose origins date back to very ancient times, in fact the earliest archaeological traces are from the Etruscan period.
Its appearance has remained almost completely unchanged over time, both in its urban structure and in its landscape.
The territory of the municipality of Radicondoli is located on the eastern edge of the Colline Metallifere (Metal-bearing Hills), and is almost entirely hilly, with an average altitude of 510 metres above sea level.
Within the municipal territory lies one of the eleven 'Nature Reserves' instituted by the Province of Siena, the 'Cornate e di Fosini Nature Reserve', in order to safeguard and protect environments of high natural, historical, and cultural value.
The Radicondoli territory is rich in numerous plant and animal species; among the wild animals that dwell or pass through during migration in these natural environments, some are very rare, such as the Peregrine Falcon and the Lanner Falcon. Among the most common and well-known are the wild boar, roe deer, fallow deer, hare and pheasant.
Radicondoli is also rich in art; among the main works to visit are: The Collegiate Church, with its majestic bell tower, The Church of the Crucifix, The Old Parish Church of the Madonna and The Convent of San Francesco dell'Osservanza, to name but a few.
Various paintings are preserved inside the Collegiate Church, including the panel painting of the 'Madonna della Mercede', of considerable artistic value, by the Sienese painter Naddo Ceccarelli, a pupil of the school of Simone Martini and Lippo Memmi.
In addition to its splendid natural, architectural and artistic riches, Radicondoli also offers characteristic places of refreshment: Pizzeria La Pergola, Bar restaurant Il Nazionale, Trattoria La Fornace, Restaurant Dietro Le mura (located in the small village of Belforte, a hamlet of the municipality of Radicondoli)
For sports enthusiasts, there is an area that includes a football pitch and two tennis courts.
Especially in summer, numerous events take place, such as 'Summer in Radicondoli', a festival of shows that boasts a tradition dating back to 1986 and has achieved national fame.
Another characteristic summer event is the 'Festa di San Giovanni', during which numerous locally produced specialities can be tasted.
In the village, there is no shortage of main services, such as a pharmacy and a doctor's surgery, as well as food shops where you can buy typical local products.
There is a completely free wi-fi area in the centre of the village, set up by the Municipality of Radicondoli.
Radicondoli is located in a strategic position, such that the main Tuscan art cities can be reached in a short time: Siena, Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Volterra, San Gimignano and Monteriggioni. For art lovers, a must-see is the suggestive Basilica of San Galgano, which, thanks to its special acoustics, is the venue for numerous classical music concerts.
Also within easy reach of Radicondoli are the Chianti vineyards and attractive seaside resorts on the Tyrrhenian coast, including: Follonica, Castiglione della Pescaia, the Etruscan Gulf of Baratti, to name but a few.
Also worth mentioning is the possibility of reaching, via the port of Piombino, the Island of Elba, which, together with the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, is part of Europe's largest Marine Park, the largest protected area in the European seas. The Park is characterised by a great variety of habitats, populated by a variety of life forms. From the beaches of Elba to the rocky cliffs of western Capraia, a myriad of plant and animal species live in every crevice of one of the most fascinating natural environments: the sea.
Those who wish to take a plunge into the past, with all its history, have the opportunity to walk along the Via Francigena. It represents another great wealth that belongs to this territory. In fact, the Via Francigena has been declared a 'Great Cultural Route' by the Council of Europe, passing through Great Britain, France, Switzerland, Italy and the Vatican State. It was started by the Longobards and later incorporated into a pilgrimage itinerary. In Tuscany, it passes through the province of Massa Carrara, Pisa, Lucca, Florence and Siena. The connection point to the Via Francigena, closest to Radicondoli, is near Monteriggioni, at Badia ad Isola and leads to Siena.
For those who want to undergo physical cures, but also to regain their physical form and beauty, the ideal is to spend a day of relaxation and pleasure at the Petriolo Thermal Baths (40 minutes by car) or at the San Giovanni Thermal Baths in Rapolano Terme (1 hour by car) surrounded by unspoilt nature. Also suitable for cycling enthusiasts.
