Location and surroundings of object
After Domburg, Renesse is one of the oldest seaside resorts in Zeeland. When tourism began to boom in 1900, local businessmen began to adapt to it and set up facilities for tourists on a small scale. The first "refreshment tent" was opened, the predecessor of today's beach pavilions. In this refreshment tent you could rent swimwear.
Renesse is located on the north side of the island of Schouwen-Duiveland, where its popularity is still increasing due to its ideal location. Today the village and its immediate surroundings offer a lot of entertainment for young and old. Today you will find a wide range of beach pavilions, street cafes, shops and entertainment.
Off the coast of the village are wide sandbanks on which seals regularly lie in the sun. The extensive North Sea coast near Renesse is particularly beautiful here, with a sandy beach almost 20 km long, which is up to several hundred metres wide at the so-called "Verklikkerduinen". This dune area is characterised by wet dune valleys with many colourful and fragrant dune plants. Large rabbit families live here and for many birds this is also a popular breeding area.
Several hiking trails in the immediate vicinity of Renesse lead through the beautiful landscape, through herds of wild Shetland ponies and Scottish highland cattle. In Westerschouwen this area merges seamlessly into the largest forest of Zeeland, "de Domeinen". Along this coastal route you will also find one of the most beautiful mountain bike routes in our country.
The area around Renesse is perfect for long cycling tours through a landscape that is only rarely seen in the Netherlands. The many quiet little country roads will take you past characteristic villages and allow you to take various safe bike rides.
The most famous buildings in Renesse are the Gothic "Jacobuskerk" in the centre of the old village and the 13th century "Slot Moermond". The castle is located in the 45 hectare park "Landgoed Moermond" and is only used for festivities. The castle is unfortunately not open to visitors.
North of Renesse lies the Grevelingenmeer with the Brouwersdam. Here active contemporaries can practice numerous sports on and around the water. For example, the Grevelingenmeer is a special diving destination and the Brouwersdam is a popular surf spot due to its favourable location.
If you leave Renesse in a southerly direction, you will reach the world-famous Delta Works with the impressive Oosterscheldekering. This storm surge barrier connects the island of Schouwen-Duiveland with the island of Neeltje Jans, where you can visit the family water park of the same name.
In Renesse you will find a large supermarket, drugstore, bakery, bicycle rental and a variety of shops, restaurants and street cafés. There are various entertainment options for young people. At the edge of the village is the "Transferium", where you can park for free and use free transport to the beaches, the town centre and the campsites during the season.
Also visit the old Dutch towns of Zierikzee, Veere and Middelburg or Zeeland's other famous holiday resort of Domburg.
