Location and surroundings of object
Our wooden houses are located at the end of the village, far away from a main road, directly at the edge of the forest. With a little luck, you can even watch the deer on the edge of the forest from your balcony. The village Waldorf The village Waldorf, situated more than 500 metres above sea level, can be found in the middle of the Eifel.
They say:
"The Eifel is the heart of Europe" and
"Waldorf is the heart of the Eifel".
The village lies on the fertile plateau between Blankenheim and Jünkerath. A high moor nearby has interesting flora.
Waldorf belonged territorially and ecclesiastically to Alendorf and therefore shares its history; even as early as 1253, when the patronage of Alendorf belonged to Malmedy Abbey.
in 1157 the village was called Valendorf. This settlement name testifies that it was the settlement of the Valen or Walen. The name Walen identifies the village as the former dwelling place of Celtic-Romans who had remained behind in the territories seized from Germanic tribes by the Romans. The Germanic tribes called this mixed Celtic-Roman people Wälsche (strangers). Waldorf therefore means "village of the Wälsche".
In the 17th century, Waldorf consisted of two separate villages, today still known as "Önneschdörf" (lower village) and "Öuweschdörf" (upper village). in 1625, Richard Hanen had a red sandstone wayside cross erected at the entrance to Unter-Waldorf, which today stands on Ahrmühlenweg. The cross shows the crucified Jesus, his mother Mary, his disciple John and Mary Magdalene.
In 1892, there were 185 inhabitants in Waldorf. Today there are about 200 inhabitants in Waldorf.
The chapel in Waldorf
The chapel community of Waldorf belongs to the parish of St. Agatha Alendorf.
The origins of the St. Dionysius Chapel go back to the 15th century, three colourful baroque altars date from the 17th century. in 1893, the chapel in Waldorf is described as being "built in stone and covered with slate". In 1494, Count Dietrich III of Blankenheim, Lord of Manderscheid and Schleiden, donated a stove to the Waldorf chapel. This date is the oldest document to date for the existence of the church in Waldorf.
The playground in Waldorf
The children's playground was newly built in June 2002 by the municipality of Blankenheim. The municipality had allocated funds in the budget for the construction and basic equipment of playground equipment.
