Gubbio , Perugia , Umbria , Italy
Gubbio was once the highest expression of Umbrian civilisation and an important centre of Roman life, as testified by the famous Eugubian Tablets and the Roman Theatre. Today, during the summer, classical plays are performed here.
Gubbio is a thriving town with a healthy climate sur-rounded by pretty hills. It is set on the side of Mount Ingino, on the top of the mountain, a monumental basilica preserves the incorrupt body of St. Ubaldo, patron saint of the town. Architectonically, Gubbio is a medieval masterpiece; between 1200 and 1300 the society was articulated into various guilds or “universitates” of arts and crafts.
The undamaged soaring towers, the austere façades of the houses darkened by the centuries, Gothic churches and palaces, both fascinating and evocative, make up the extraordinary historic centre, which is symbolic of the power of the medieval city-state. The magnificent “Palazzo dei Consoli”, “Piazza pensile” and “Palazzo Pretorio”, which date back to the beginning of the 14th century, are the heart of the town. Other places of interest are: the Cathedral (12th century), Santa Maria Nuova, which contains the “Madonna del Belvedere”, painted by Ottaviano Nelli in 1413, the Church and convent of St. Augustine (13th century) with frescoes by Nelli, the Church and convent of St. Francis (13th century), the Church of St. John, with a 13th century Romanesque façade and bell tower, St. Peter's Church, enlarged in 1505, the Church of St. Dominic, enlarged in the 14th century. The Beni House, the Bargello and the House of the Captain of the People are also worth visiting. The Ducal Palace, built by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, recalls the splendour of the Montefeltro dukes. Gubbio was an important town and an integral part of their dukedom and the great Frederick of Montefeltro, a leader of mercenary armies and patron of the arts, was born here in 1422.
Gubbio is a City of art, homeland of artists, like the miniaturist Oderisi, the painter Ottaviano Nelli, the architect Matteo di Giovannello (Gattapone) and the ceramist Mastro Giorgio Andreoli, who was unsurpassed master of reverberation and whose works are in the most important museums in the world. Gubbio is also full of evidence of the life of St. Francis, some important episodes of is life took place in Gubbio: here he started wearing the typical frock, given to him by the Spadalonga family, who gave him hospitality after he left Assisi. Part of their house was made into the Church of St. Francis. The famous taming of the wolf look place in Gubbio and is represented by the statue beside the church and here Francis assisted the lepers. The route followed by Francis through the valley of the river Chiascio is being restored to its original environmental and spiritual condition.
In Gubbio there is a variety of public and private museums, like the Consuls' Palace, the Ducal Palace, the Porta Romana Tower, the important Diocese Museum is being restored and will be reopened at Easter 2000. Behind Gubbio the Gorge of the Bottaccione is very charming and interesting, because it contains a layer of clay that hold the key to the disappearance of the dinosaurs, dating back to 65 mil-lion years ago. Here are only some of the extraordinary treasures of this unique territory. The local cuisine is also very important; traditional foods and simple specialities with very high quality white truffle are prepared in the Eugubian territory.
Finally, the production of arts and crafts is particularly appreciated, with traditional crafts like pottery, wrought iron, restoration of antique forniture and books and leatherwork. A lot of shops can be found along the most characteristic streets in the historic centre of the town.
CERI FESTIVAL - 15th May
It takes place on the eve of the death of St. Ubaldo, the patron saint of Gubbio and it has been held for many centuries. The Ceri are three massive wooden constructions with little statues of St Ubaldo, St George and St Anthony on the top. They are carried from the historic centre to the Basilica of St Ubaldo, on the top of Mount Ingino in an extraordinary race which starts in the morning and continues in the after-noon. This is one of the most important religious folk festivals in Italy. The Ceri of Gubbio have become the symbol of the region of Umbria.
