Casa Fontefaggio (house of the beech root), a centuries old farmhouse, long deserted, took us three years to restore as a luxurious villa. We carefully preserved the old style walls and the roof and replaced what could not be reused. In laying out the rooms and in choosing furniture and furnishings, we aimed at a stylish symbiosis of the old and new. Our guests have been pleased and impressed with the results.The casa lies at an altitude of 600 meters, below the village of Fratticiola Selvatica, in a triangle formed by Perugia, Gubbio and Assisi (see map). Its hillside position profits from a cool breeze at night, even with daytime temperatures of around 30C.You can enjoy the long sunsets with an aperitif or while barbecuing on the west-facing terrace. And the unimpeded view of the charming countryside is a constant delight.The unique location provides a cocoon of privacy rarely found today. There is no traffic or disco noise and the house and pool are well shielded from distant neighbours’ eyes. A 40-inch TV receiving about 800 stations from 2 satellites provides a link to the world outside. A large collection of videos can be viewed on the first floor without disturbing guests on the ground floor.The generously proportioned lounges on two floors, the 5 bedrooms – with 5 double beds and 2 single beds – as well as the 4 bathrooms, all with shower, sink and toilet, 3 with bathtub, offer our guests ample space to enjoy their vacation together and separately. The house, the exterior and the pool are looked after by of a local couple who receive guests in the village, lead them to the house, and introduce them to the operational essentials. Bed linen, bath and pool towels are supplied, as are sun beds and umbrellas at the pool. Saturday is change-over day, unless otherwise agreed.

Half an hour’s driving away lie the historic towns of Perugia, Gubbio and Assisi. Small enough to be explored entirely on foot, a single visit cannot do justice to their architectural and artistic treasures. In an hour’s driving one reaches Spello, Trevi, Montefalco, Todi, the ceramics town of Deruta and Lake Trasimeno. Within two hours driving lie Spoleto, Orvieto, Cortona, Siena and Florence – and the Adriatic.Umbria is greener than Tuscany. Its hills are covered in forest, vines and olive groves descend the slopes and in the valleys sunflowers, tobacco and maize grow in small fields.

With its 700 inhabitants Fratticiola Selvatica has a small supermarket with a perfectly adequate product range, a baker, two bars and a church. Larger shops in the valley offer what is not available locally. There is a choice of good restaurants within 10kms from the house. Our guests can also order a meal freshly prepared by a local lady to be brought to the house. We recommend Maria’s ‘spezzatino di cinghiale’, a delicious goulash of local wild boar.
