Travel guide Südburgenland
Heading towards idyll and originality
South Burgenland, with the districts Oberwart, Güssing, and
Jennersdorf (from north to south), is located in southeastern Austria and borders Hungary and Slovenia. The federal capital
Vienna is about 100 kilometers to the north. From southern Germany, you can comfortably reach your private vacation rental in South Burgenland by train via
Graz. From there, the Steirische Ostbahn train runs towards Szombathely with stops in Jennersdorf and Mogersdorf. The nearest motorway exit is on the A 2 South Motorway between Vienna and Graz. Book a vacation accommodation according to your personal wishes, and enjoy a glass of South Burgenland's wine idyll on your terrace or balcony as you savor the beautiful landscape.
Where wine and fruit thrive
Burgenland is a wine and fruit garden. The climate is accordingly mild – especially in the southern part of the region. Here, influences from the Alpine climate and the Mediterranean area of the Adriatic are noticeable. In
Neusiedl am See, a temperature record of 40 °C was measured. Usually, temperatures in summer rise to an average of 26 °C and hover around freezing in winter. On a rainy day, recover in one of the region's beautiful thermal spas.
Goulash, Sterz, and Uhudler
Burgenland once belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary. This can still be seen in today's traditional Burgenland cuisine. Croatian and Slovenian influences also play a role. Sterz, a puree made from wheat flour, lard, potatoes, or beans, is a typical dish. Goulash variations and the use of paprika and paprika powder reveal the Hungarian part of the culinary tradition. For simple, regional, and affordable dining, go to one of the many Buschenschenken and order a Brettljause with local sausage, ham and cheese variations, accompanied by crispy farmer's bread. Be sure to visit the region's wineries and wine shops, and try a dark, mineral-rich Blaufränkisch from Eisenberg, featuring flavors of sweet cherries and dark forest berries, as a perfect companion to game dishes. A specialty is Uhudler, a wine made from rare and atypical grape varieties like Noah, Isabella, Elvira, Ripatella, Clinton, and Delaware. It is characterized by its intense currant aroma and is best enjoyed in Heiligenbrunn's cellar district, with its protected straw-covered wine cellars, Buschenschenken, press rooms, and clay-sealed wooden houses.
Hiking, cycling, swimming - all good things come in threes
If you're planning a
mountain vacation in Austria, South Burgenland might not be your first choice, since its highest peaks only reach about 400 meters above sea level. However, the region scores with its idyllic hilly landscape, which is perfect for extended hikes and cycling tours. Golfers will find excellent conditions at the largest golf resort in Austria, located in Bad Tatzmannsdorf and Stegersbach. One of the most popular hiking trails is the Bernstein Trail, which, thanks to the mild climate, is ready to be explored early in the year. With a low difficulty level, it is perfect for hiking with children or a
vacation with a dog. The natural bathing lake Königsdorf attracts families not only with about 3 hectares of bathing area but also with a pedal boat rental, a floating island, and a designated area for small children, ensuring plenty of water fun.
Churches and monasteries, castles and fortresses - Tracing history
There is a wealth of history to discover near your vacation home. Immerse yourself in a world of monasteries, churches, castles, and fortresses. High up on a hill above the Tauchental Valley, you'll find Bernstein Castle, whose origins date back to the 13th century. The spacious complex, with fortification walls, a garden, chapel, and magnificent banquet halls, can be visited on guided tours. Schlaining Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Austria, boasting architectural elements from the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. Its walls are up to eight meters thick. The oldest castle in Burgenland is Güssing Castle, dating back to the 12th century. From its walls, you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view all the way to Hungary. Among the churches, the Basilica of Maria Heimsuchung in Güssing and the pilgrimage church of St. Emmerich in Inzenhof are worth seeing. The unique feature of St. Emmerich is its location right on the border between Austria and Hungary. To explore the cultural history of South Burgenland, visit the open-air museum Bad Tatzmannsdorf, which features buildings from the 18th to the early 20th centuries.
