We have already felt at home for the third time in three generations of our extended family in the Ahorntal country house. Both the spacious and tastefully furnished living room with a long dining table and the huge enchanting garden invite play, cozy lounging, or sunbathing, as well as quiet retreats. The kitchen is large enough for joint cooking activities, the room layout is suitable, and the evening sauna was an additional bonus point. The large trampoline was a highlight for the children. There is also plenty of toys, a climbing house with a slide, and a sand roundabout. In the area, there is plenty to discover, from museums, castles, baths, or hiking and climbing tours. The landlords are super friendly and uncomplicated. We would love to come back anytime.

Upper Franconia boasts five different holiday regions and independent cities within a short distance: Franconian Switzerland, the Fichtelgebirge, the Frankenwald, the Obermaintal, and the Steigerwald. Castles, palaces, and churches, cities with historic market squares offer a rich array of attractions. Bamberg, the largest city in Upper Franconia, is also known as "Franconian Rome." Like the Italian capital, Bamberg was built on seven hills. Among the most significant attractions is the Bamberg Cathedral. With its four slender towers, the impressive sacred building towers over the surroundings. The most famous attraction of the cathedral is the Bamberg Horseman. This figure, made from several sandstone blocks, was probably created around 1230 and is considered the first life-sized equestrian statue of the Middle Ages. Adjacent to the north side of the cathedral is the old court, one of the two episcopal residences, where Emperor Henry II established his palace in 1020. Nearby is the baroque New Residence Bamberg. More than 40 stately rooms in the palace display valuable furnishings. One of the most beautiful sights in Bamberg is the picturesque district of Little Venice. Along the banks of the Regnitz, houses line up in medieval half-timbered style. Here, you can also rent a gondola to explore this beautiful gem.
The region of Upper Franconia and the adjacent Thuringian Forest offer a wide range of exciting excursion destinations, such as the Coburg region with Veste Coburg (Upper Maintal), the cozy Bad Steben in a quiet location, the Basilica Vierzehnheiligen in Bad Staffelstein, and the Rosenberg Fortress. Something very special is the Devil's Cave. It is a natural stalactite cave near the small town of Pottenstein. It is the largest of the approximately 1,000 caves in Franconian Switzerland. About half of the cave (about 3 km) is accessible during guided tours. The entrance to the cave - the so-called Devil's Hole - is a 14-meter-high and 25-meter-wide rock grotto. The interior of the cave consists of several large halls connected by narrow passages.
Attention all explorers, big and small! There are few other German holiday regions with as much to see as in Franconian Switzerland – for example, 170 medieval castles, over 1,000 large and small caves, romantic mills, and a historic steam railway. Take a trip back to the Middle Ages! Whether it's Rabenstein Castle, Egloffstein Castle, or Waischenfeld Castle – almost everywhere in the region you'll encounter remnants of medieval life and enjoy the romantic and at the same time mystical atmosphere that the old stone buildings create on the picturesque Jura heights. It also gets mysterious when exploring the ruins: Thuisbrunn and Rabeneck, for example, are semi-ruins, with some parts still preserved to this day. The ruins of Streitberg and Neideck in the Wiesent Valley are also worth a visit. From high above, you have a wonderful view over the valley and can feel like castle lords. In addition to the rustic charm of the castles and ruins, 15 palaces also captivate with their beauty. For example, the impressive Renaissance building of Wiesenthau or the water castle Kunreuth from 1390, which is still owned by the Egloffstein noble family. Another family-friendly attraction in Bayreuth is the Ecological-Botanical Garden, where visitors can take a botanical world tour on the 16-hectare site within a few hours: from tropical rainforests to the mountain vegetation of the Himalayas. About 12,000 plant species can be admired here.
Classics of Upper Franconian cuisine include the "Brotzeit," starting with various types of bratwursts - also cooked as "blue tips" - to Ziebelas cheese, plum bames, homemade aspic, red and white pressack, blood and liver sausages, to smoked ham and cold roast - accompanied by freshly baked country bread. These delicacies can also be enjoyed privately in your holiday apartment or house. Visitors from all over the world come to Upper Franconia to discover the world of Upper Franconian roasts and meat dishes. Choices include Krenfleisch with horseradish sauce, crispy brown roasted pork shoulder, lamb, duck, and goose, pork roast with "green" (raw) dumplings, Franconian sauerbraten, or naturally freshly served carp. Bratwursts vary regionally: The Coburg bratwurst is the largest at 25 cm, the coarse filling in pork intestine is roasted over an open pine cone fire, giving it a special flavor. Similarly coarse, but smaller, are the bratwursts in the Forchheim area, medium coarse in the areas around Lichtenfels and Kronach. Fine bratwursts, rather long and thin, are found in the areas around Hof, Bayreuth, and Kulmbach. The latter is served in a bratwurst roll, a long roll with a lot of anise. Whether to add mustard or not is up to each individual.
In Bayreuth, the second-largest city in Upper Franconia, the Richard Wagner Festival takes place annually in the summer. Among the attractions is the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth, considered one of the best-preserved and most beautiful Baroque theaters in Europe. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. Margravine Wilhelmine ensured in 1744 that an opera house was built that is unique in Bavaria. The Bayreuth Festival Theatre has been the venue for the world-famous Richard Wagner Festival since 1876 and is located on the Green Hill. At the edge of the Bayreuth Court Garden is another great attraction: Wahnfried House was the residence of the composer Richard Wagner. The rooms of the former residence are now used as a museum.
Upper Franconia is situated in the north of the Free State of Bavaria and borders the states of Saxony and Thuringia, as well as the Karlovy Vary Region in the Czech Republic. The ICE train from Hamburg to Berlin to Munich stops in Bamberg and also in Coburg. This allows you to quickly and comfortably reach your accommodation, whether it's an affordable holiday home or a privately rented apartment.
