Undoubtedly, the vast sandy beaches and dune landscapes are the main attractions of Nieuwvliet and the neighboring villages of the Sluis municipality. Within walking distance from your holiday home in Nieuwvliet, there is a lovingly restored windmill, typical of the Netherlands. In the main town, you can visit a well-preserved fortification, unique in the Netherlands for featuring a so-called belfry, a tall, slender bell tower that was not part of a church but a secular building. In the neighboring village Groede, the lighthouse is worth a visit, and in Aardenburg, there is a small local museum with an exhibition on the cultural history of the region. The Gothic St. Bavochurch, whose construction began in the early Middle Ages, is considered one of the most beautiful churches in the Netherlands from that period. Additionally, the Sint Kruis Church with its massive western tower from the 14th century is worth a visit.
A proud 17 kilometers of the North Sea coast belong to the Sluis municipality, including the seaside resort Nieuwvliet-Bad. The fine, wide sandy beaches gently slope into the North Sea, making them ideal for a family vacation. Behind the beaches lies a vast dune landscape and the "De Verdronken Zwarte Polder" nature reserve. In the tidal pools, the water warms up even more than on the beaches during low tide, creating small bathtubs and paddling pools. Another popular bathing spot near the Belgian border is Cadzand. The beaches of Sluis are particularly popular among water sports enthusiasts. Beginners can find schools for catamaran sailing, wind and kite surfing, surf kayaking, and stand-up paddling. And: The beaches are perfect for a holiday with dogs in Nieuwvliet. Outside the peak season, your four-legged family members can run and frolic off-leash on all beaches. During the main season, a leash is required. Besides water sports, cycling is a major activity. The network of cycle paths takes you from your holiday apartment in Nieuwvliet to the most beautiful villages in the area and back along the coast with a tailwind. "Fietscafes" provide refreshments and snacks along the way.
Zeeland is a paradise for lovers of fish, seafood, shellfish, and crustaceans. The North Sea, along with rivers and canals, provides both marine and freshwater fish. Popular specialties from the North Sea include matjes (young herrings), mussels, and crabs, as well as flatfish. Eel, caught from the drainage canals of the polders, is another delicacy, served either cooked or smoked. The extensive polder fields are grazed by sheep, lambs, and cattle. However, gourmets should temper their expectations in the Netherlands. The dishes are tasty but generally simple. Additionally, the Dutch love snacks like Bitterballen (meatballs), French fries, and Kibbeling (battered fried fish pieces). These are perfectly complemented by one of the many Dutch or Belgian beers.
