With the development of the thermal iodine-salt healing spring and the construction of the spa center with a spa park, clinics, and spa homes, the town became increasingly popular. The old town of Bad Bevensen was completely rebuilt with a changed layout after a fire in 1811. Johann Peter Eckermann, a friend and private secretary of Wolfgang Goethe, served as the mayor's secretary in Bad Bevensen. He prescribed the layout incorporating hygiene and fire safety regulations. As you walk down Brückenstraße into the old town, despite the fire, you can still see some remarkable old houses. At the end of the street, on the left side, is the romantic half-timbered house of the former rural trading company "Joh. Chr. Praesent Wwe" from 1826. At the corner of Kirchenstraße/Lüneburger Straße, right on the church square, stands the house of the Stegen company, built in 1778. On the church square, an iron bell commemorates the hard times. Next to the tower of the Dreikönigskirche hangs a sixteen-ton carillon that plays melodies three times a day, adapted to the time of day and season. The oldest house from the 17th century can be admired in Bäckergang. The massive half-timbered beams and the gable crane remind of the former function of the former trading house. The house of the Bartheidel family at Bergstraße/Ecke Bäckergang was built around 1608 and is also one of the oldest houses in the town.
