Nine green islands in the middle of the ocean invite you to be discovered: the Azores, a paradise of tranquility and untouched nature, undiscovered by mass tourism. The region fascinates with its breathtaking and diverse landscape, and the sea impresses with its gentle whales and dolphins. The islands are perfect for a hiking vacation as well as a beach holiday with the family. The Azores are perfect hiking islands, with their fantastic views, unknown corners, and a well-marked trail network inviting you to explore on foot. Two of the most famous attractions on the islands can also be explored by hiking: Lagoa das Furnas is a lake on the Azorean island São Miguel. This lake is located near the town of Furnas, in the east of the island, about 43 km from Ponta Delgada. It is a sight to behold due to the hot sulfur springs (Fumarolas da Lagoa das Furnas). Particularly noteworthy: The nearly 100 m deep volcanic vent Algar do Carvao in the center of Terceira. The cave was formed about 2,000 years ago. The entire area is designated as a nature reserve, the volcanic vent a regional natural monument and an absolute must-see. The expelled lava has left behind a lava chimney, through which you can walk today. The crater lakes, as well as the unique bird species of the Azores, are also breathtaking highlights.
It is one of the most impressive experiences ever to see a huge whale rise up next to you. To date, 24 whale species have been spotted in the waters around the archipelago. The main center for observing the archipelago's animals is the island of Pico, which is considered one of the best spots worldwide for whale watching. The outings are usually half-day. Before heading out to sea, there is a detailed introduction with information about the whale species. The likelihood of seeing whales is very high, experienced whale watchers sit in the whale lookouts on land, watch the sea with good binoculars, and direct the boats. On Pico, snorkeling with dolphins is also offered.
Especially Santa Maria is known as the "Ilha do Sol," the sun island with the most beautiful sandy beaches and the warmest climate. Perfect beach holidays can be enjoyed on Santa Maria until November. Particularly, Praia Formosa "beautiful beach" is located in a wide bay, with light sand, shallow water, and is therefore ideal for children. In addition to excellent hiking opportunities and beautiful beaches, the Azores are also a paradise for diving enthusiasts. Along the rugged coasts, especially on Faial, there are tunnels, caves, and grottoes. A tremendous variety of species lives in the waters around the islands. There are diving centers on some of the islands. Everywhere, numerous marine creatures and fascinating underwater landscapes await you. Further out at sea are the diving spots Princess Alice Banks and Formigas (off Santa Maria).
The national dish is Bacalhau, a salted and sun-dried cod, also known as stockfish. Traditionally, food is prepared in a so-called Cataplana. It is a stew, usually fish with potatoes and all sorts of vegetables, cooked in a tightly sealed copper pan. Equally traditional is Alcatra: beef stewed in a clay pot. Squid is also found on almost all menus. Another popular delicacy is Lapas, a type of shellfish with orange flesh. Morçela (blood sausage), Linguiça (smoked sausage), and Inhame (yams) should be tried during your vacation, as they are among the most popular delicacies. Here are some restaurant tips: In Sao Miguel with the capital Ribeira, you should definitely try the specialty Cocidos, a stew cooked in a thermal vent, at Casa O Miroma. The Cavalo Branco, a small authentic restaurant with Azorean specialties, is also highly recommended. Or prepare a Cataplana yourself in your holiday home or affordable apartment with a kitchen and sea view far away from the mainland. The famous Portuguese fish stew is very simple and tasty.
Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites are located in the Azores: the historic town of Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira and the vineyards on Pico. Often, just walking from house to house through the streets is enough to experience the art and culture of the region. Here, the Renaissance architectural style is particularly noteworthy. Almost every house (Casa) has whitewashed walls adorned with black, intricately worked lava stones. They surround almost every house as well as churches and monasteries. In addition, the numerous wind and water mills shape the image of the Azorean islands. Almost every house features individual or multiple faience tiles, the so-called Azulejos. The tiles are simply held in blue and white and are small artworks that beautify one's own Casa. Another island-specific gem is the "Scrimshaw." These are whale teeth that have been decorated with engravings or paintings.
The Azores belong to Portugal, but are over 1,300 km away from the European mainland. Those who book a holiday home or apartment with sea views and Wi-Fi here will discover fantastic landscapes and enchanting small villages with friendly people. Each of the nine Azorean islands (São Miguel, Santa Maria, Terceira, Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Graciosa, Flores, and Corvo) has its own unique features; no island is like the other, but all are worth seeing. São Miguel is the largest island of the Azores with over 131,000 inhabitants, while only 425 people live on Corvo. Airlines SATA and Ryanair provide travel options to your accommodation or holiday home. With the Portuguese airline TAP, there is the option to fly to your residence or villa on the islands with a stopover in Lisbon. While SATA and Ryanair land directly on the main island of São Miguel, TAP offers the opportunity to head to further destinations from Lisbon and also book open-jaw flights. By plane, you are less than 5 hours away from your holiday home. The Azorean airline SATA offers year-round direct flights from Frankfurt/Main to Ponta Delgada to your holiday home or apartment in Ginetes. Ryanair has been flying directly from Frankfurt/Hahn to Ponta Delgada every Saturday since spring 2017. There are daily connections to Lisbon from numerous German cities. From there, you can continue to your holiday home or apartment with a garden and a view of nature. Also, Lisbon is worth a visit!
