The Wadden Sea on the south side of Ameland offers beautiful panoramic views and is an important retreat for many bird and fish species. This shallow coastal area of about one million hectares extends from Den Helder to Denmark. Since June 2009, the Wadden Sea has been a UNESCO World Heritage site. On Ameland alone, there are 40 different wader birds and a great diversity of plants. Although Ameland is a North Sea island, deer live here. Last century, a stag came to Ameland: He jumped over the sandbanks and swam through the tidal creeks. Here, in the extensive sea buckthorn scrub, he found a suitable habitat. The islanders bought a doe to join him. Counts have shown that now more than 100 deer live here, lovingly cared for by the people of Ameland.

This place, with 1,260 residents, is the largest village on Ameland and is located at its western end. How do I come to Ameland?

Enjoy the Ferry Ride to Your Vacation Home

Taking a ferry to your vacation home or apartment on the North Sea island of Ameland is an essential part of the journey. Thus, your vacation begins not only upon arrival at the apartment but also on board the ferries "Sier" and "Oerd," which depart several times daily from Holwerd in Friesland, Netherlands. The crossing takes 45 minutes. Be sure to book your ferry in advance to reach your holiday accommodation. A water taxi can halve the travel time, but it is also quite expensive. The main village on Ameland is the quaint village of Nes. Traveling by car to your vacation apartment in the Netherlands is most convenient to the ferry port Holwerd via Leeuwarden, coming from Berlin on the Hamburg – Bremen – Papenburg route and then towards Groningen. Travelers from southern Germany can reach Leeuwarden via Frankfurt, Cologne, Duisburg, and Arnhem. The journey by train via Groningen or Leeuwarden is particularly convenient, with direct buses from there to Holwerd's ferry terminal - where your journey to a cozy vacation home with lots of privacy almost begins.
