SÄCHSISCHE SCHWEIZ - The peak of nature
Just beyond the gates of Dresden in the direction of the CSR border, you will be surprised by one of Germany's most idiosyncratic natural beauties: the wildly romantic rock world of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, large parts of which have been elevated to the status of a national park.

Bizarre rock needles, reefs and deep gorges alternate with wide plateaus, large, quiet forests and lovely valleys, above which table mountains rise. Embedded in pure nature: the Elbe, on which the oldest paddle steamer fleet in the world operates, and many a cosy little town.

Of course, a holiday is the most natural thing in the world: 1200 km of hiking trails await leisurely and demanding natures - in a dense variety that is unparalleled, from walking trails to via ferratas. About 14 000 (fourteen thousand!) climbing paths from easy to extremely difficult lead to 1100 free-standing peaks - we wish -

Hiking tour along the Malerweg in Saxon Switzerland
In June 2006, one of the most wildly romantic hiking routes in Germany was revived. Even 200 years ago, travellers were fascinated by the inexhaustible wealth of bizarre rock formations, wildly romantic gorges and sublime table mountains with breathtaking views. Many painters of later generations followed their footsteps through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, including such famous figures as the Romantics Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus and Ludwig Richter. All of them followed a preferred route that later became known as the "Malerweg". Today it also continues to the left of the Elbe.

The quality of the hiking trail in the Saxon Switzerland National Park and National Park Region is characterised by a diverse and varied landscape, impressive vantage points, unspoilt paths and numerous places to stop for refreshments and attractions along the way. Hiking with or without luggage, as an occasional hiker or in a hiking club, hiking as a sporting challenge or simply enjoying nature while hiking - the Malerweg is one of Europe's dream trails
in 2007, the hiking trail already received two awards. The jury of the hiking magazine Wandermagazin named the Elbe Sandstone Mountains Painters' Trail "Germany's Most Beautiful Hiking Trail". Hikers voted it "Germany's Most Popular Hiking Trail" for 2008/09.
We have compiled information about hiking on the Malerweg for you on our website. For each stage, you can view the individual tour plan, adapt it to your needs and print it out. You can see bus departure times, opening times of sights and much more. Have fun browsing!

The town of Königstein is located between Pirna and the Czech border at the confluence of the Biela and the Elbe in the south of the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district in Germany. Here in the middle of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, a variety of scenic formations can be observed. The fortress on Königstein itself stands on a sandstone cliff above the Elbe valley. The valleys carved out by streams and rivers give rise to bizarre slopes and rocky landscapes, as is the case everywhere in the region. The only moor in Saxon Switzerland used to exist near Leupoldishain, but it fell victim to drainage in 1870, although it can still be identified by its typical residual vegetation.

In addition to their geological attractiveness, the Nikolsdorf walls are a popular climbing area. In the area of Pfaffendorf, adjacent to the Pfaffenstein, stands one of the landmarks of Saxon Switzerland, the 35 m high needle of the Barbarine, a geological natural monument that was first climbed in 1905. Numerous finds document settlement since the Bronze Age
At the foot of the fortress, which is unique in Germany, and directly on the Elbe, is the town of Königstein, which has about 2400 inhabitants. Here, holidaymakers and day trippers can enjoy fascinating landscape experiences in the beautiful Saxon Switzerland.

The town owes its name to the former castle and later fortress, which was first mentioned in a document in 1241. Königstein was first mentioned in a document from 1379.

We wish you a pleasant stay on our internet presentation and look forward to your visit to the real Königstein.

Alles OK
