SAXON SWITZERLAND - The summit of nature
Right beyond the gates of Dresden in the direction of the Czech border, you will be surprised by one of Germany's most unique natural beauties: the wild and romantic rocky landscape of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, much of which has been designated a national park. Bizarre rock needles, reefs, and deep gorges alternate with wide plateaus, large, quiet forests, and lovely valleys over which table mountains rise. Nestled in pure nature: the Elbe, on which the oldest paddle steamer fleet in the world operates, and many a cozy little town.

Of course, here vacation is the most natural thing in the world: 1,200 km of hiking trails await both leisurely and ambitious nature lovers—in a dense variety that is second to none, from walking paths to via ferratas. About 14,000 (fourteen thousand!) climbing routes from easy to extremely difficult lead to 1,100 free-standing summits – with that, we wish you –

Safe climbing!

Hiking tour Malerweg in Saxon Switzerland
In June 2006, one of the most wild and romantic hiking routes in Germany was brought back to life. Even 200 years ago, travelers were fascinated by the inexhaustible abundance of bizarre rock formations, wild romantic gorges, and majestic table mountains with breathtaking views. Many painters of later generations followed in their footsteps through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, including such famous ones as the Romantics Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus, and Ludwig Richter. All followed a preferred route that later became known as the “Painter’s Path.” Today, it continues on the left side of the Elbe as well. The quality of the hiking trail in the national park and the Saxon Switzerland National Park region is characterized by a diverse and varied landscape, impressive viewpoints, natural paths, as well as numerous places to stop for refreshments and attractions along the way. Hiking with or without luggage, as a casual hiker or in a hiking club, hiking as a sporting challenge or simply enjoying nature while hiking – the Malerweg is one of Europe’s dream trails. In 2007, the hiking trail already received two awards. The jury of Wandermagazin named the Malerweg Elbsandsteingebirge the "Most Beautiful Hiking Trail in Germany." Hikers voted it the "Most Popular Hiking Trail in Germany" for 2008/09.
On the website, we have compiled information for you about hiking on the Malerweg. For each stage, you can display the individual tour plan, adjust it to your needs, and print it out. You can see the bus departure times, opening hours of sights, and much more. Have fun browsing!

The town of Königstein is located between Pirna and the Czech border at the mouth of the Biela into the Elbe in the south of the district Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge in Germany. Here, in the middle of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, a variety of landscape formations can be observed. The fortress on the Königstein itself stands on a sandstone rock above the Elbe valley. The valleys washed out by streams and rivers, as everywhere in the region, create bizarre slope and rock landscapes. Near Leupoldishain existed the only moor of Saxon Switzerland, which, however, fell victim to drainage in 1870, but can still be identified by typical remnant vegetation.

The Nikolsdorf Walls, in addition to their geological appeal, are a popular climbing area. In the local area of Pfaffendorf, adjacent to the Pfaffenstein, stands one of the landmarks of Saxon Switzerland, the 35-meter-high needle of the Barbarine, a geological natural monument that was first climbed in 1905. Numerous finds document settlement since the Bronze Age.
At the foot of the fortress, unique in Germany, and directly on the Elbe, lies the town of Königstein, with about 2,400 inhabitants. Here, holiday guests and day-trippers are offered fascinating landscape experiences in the beautiful Saxon Switzerland.

The city owes its name to the former castle and later fortress, which was first mentioned in documents in 1241. In a document from the year 1379, Königstein was mentioned for the first time.

We wish you a pleasant stay on our website and look forward to your visit to the real Königstein.

All OK

We have discovered a new spot in Germany and it is simply wonderful. The Saxon Switzerland is so diverse. Even our children, 12 and 14 years old, had a lot of fun hiking. And our two dogs, of course.
We were superbly accommodated at your place, Family Kießling. The little holiday home is situated very idyllically, perfect for our hiking tours to Pfaffenstein, Quirl, and the Diebeshöhle, Königstein Fortress, and Lilienstein. Since we have only seen a small part in one week, we must definitely come back. Preferably to the House by the Stone.
