Location and surroundings of object
In the heart of the Wendland, not far from the towns of Lüchow and Salzwedel, surrounded by the Green Belt, with its lush and untouched meadows, and endless fields and forests, lies the cosy, modernly furnished, private holiday flat 'Zum alten Zollhaus'.
A paradise for young and old: start your hiking or cycling tour through the Green Belt directly from the front door. Whether you are planning just a short round trip or a day trip, there are routes of all lengths and levels of difficulty to choose from. If you are travelling with children, the play paradise starts right behind the house. Slide, swing, sandpit and playhouse await your youngest. The property, which is fenced in all around, offers plenty of free space and safety for the little ones and thus provides a little more relaxation for the parents. The Wendland is an area in the quadrangle of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which has its core in the Hanover Wendland, in the district of Lüchow-Dannenberg in Lower Saxony.
The name Wendland comes from the term Wenden, as the inhabitants of West Slavic origin, who were also called Polaben, were called in the area of today's Wendland in the 18th century. However, it is not a traditional name, as the Slavic tribes, who came mainly from the area of today's Ukraine, settled in the region of today's Wendland as early as the seventh century. Even today, relics of that time are omnipresent in the Wendland, as many place names originate from this period, places such as Lüchow, Drawehn, Wustrow and Lübeln.
Not only the place names have remained, but also the unique settlement form of the Rundlingsdörfer, which represents a Slavic settlement form. Even today, visitors can marvel at these historically valuable villages in places like Breese im Bruche, Bussau, Gühlitz, Jabel, Jameln, Lübeln, Meuchefitz, Reetze, Satemin and Schreyahn. The historical significance is also evident from the fact that these Rundling villages in the Hanoverian Wendland were nominated in 2012 by the state of Lower Saxony for the German Tentative List in future UNSECO World Heritage applications.
The western Wendland merges into the Lüneburg Heath, although most of the Hanover Wendland lies in the primeval valley of the Elbe. In the north is the Elbtalaue, while the rest is known as the Lüchower Niederung, crossed by a variety of watercourses, including the Jeetzel.
The town of Bergen is first mentioned in 1203, when the land was divided among the sons of Henry the Lion. At that time, Bergen still had town status and trade flourished due to its favourable location on the freight route between Hamburg and Leipzig. In the course of history, Bergen has had to endure both good and bad times.
In more recent history, Bergen is referred to as a stain. Small settlements that are locally significant and take on central functions are called "Flecken". In Lower Saxony, the term "Flecken" was sometimes associated with the seat of a royal office.
Before the division of Germany, Bergen's influence on the villages of the Old Mark Brandenburg and the town of Salzwedel was noticeable, so that the demarcation of the border did not pass Bergen by without leaving a trace. Seven independent villages were incorporated in the course of the 1972 municipal reform. A year later, Bergen benefited somewhat from the opening of the inner-German border crossing. After this border finally fell on 3 October 1990, the border region became a holiday destination in the middle of Germany. In June 2003, Bergen celebrated its 800th anniversary.
Today Bergen an der Dumme is part of the Lüchow joint municipality, surrounded by nature and a popular destination for recreation and cycle tourism. It consists of the districts of Banzau, Belau, Bergen an der Dumme, Jiggel, Malsleben, Nienbergen, Spithal and Wöhningen.
