Unique landscapes and numerous leisure opportunities
The Elbe Valley and Drawehn, a ridge up to 142 meters high, make the landscape of Wendland wonderfully diverse. If you want to rent a vacation apartment or an affordable holiday home with WiFi in the river landscape, the town of Hitzacker is recommended. This romantic little town with its beautiful half-timbered houses is located at the confluence of the Jeetzel and the Elbe and has the northernmost vineyards ever. Also well-known are the towns of Gartow am See, Dannenberg, and Zernien, as well as Gorleben. You can explore the beautiful landscape of Wendland very well by boat, on a hike, or during a bike tour.
In the county town of Lüchow, a charming old town awaits you with an impressive insight into the German Timber-Frame Road. Half-timbered house after half-timbered house lines up in the historic city center. The houses, painted in various colors, will remain in your memory for a long time. And also the unique plant field with fire lilies in Govelin triggers a fireworks display of colors. When the lilies bloom in summer, the field shines in bright colors that you have surely never seen before. If you want to experience unspoiled nature up close during a vacation in an affordable vacation apartment or a wonderful holiday home with a garden in Wendland, but also want to be active in sports, you have numerous opportunities here as well: welly throwing, sailing on Gartower Lake, or archery provide a welcome change. The Nemitzer Heath is also a popular excursion destination, through which a 25-kilometer-long hiking trail leads. A hike in August and September, when the heather is in full bloom, is particularly impressive. But even in other seasons, the sparse dune landscape has its charm. In Gorleben, you spend beautiful vacation days amidst impressive natural landscapes with large forest areas. Thanks to its location directly on the Elbe in the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve, there are numerous leisure activities for hikers, water sports enthusiasts, and anglers. A bike ride or a walk right along the Elbe is a great experience at any time of the year. Furthermore, the town has a modern marina for sports boats.
Exploring the beauties of Wendland
The small towns of Dannenberg, Lüchow, and Hitzacker invite you to shop and stroll. In Hitzacker, there is the vineyard with a magnificent view of the Elbe and the opportunity to take a boat trip on the Elbe. From architecture to history, from culture to nature, a vacation in a private accommodation in Wendland offers suitable activities for everyone. The landscape is made diverse by the Drawehn, a ridge up to 142 meters high, and by the Elbe Valley. Wendland in the eastern Lüneburg Heath offers excellent opportunities to enjoy nature and the beauties of the landscape. But beyond that, many attractions also draw visitors here. The round villages in Wendland are absolutely unique worldwide, but the natural landscapes of Nemitzer Heath and the Elbe Valley also have a very special charm.
Regional specialties from Wendland
Nowhere is the Wendland way of life better reflected than in the kitchen. Schwarzsauer, blood soup, or black soup is only eaten directly on the day of slaughter and is rather something for the hardy. As in the rest of Lower Saxony, Wendland cuisine is partly hearty and down-to-earth. Before the main course, a soup is often served, with the so-called wedding soup being very popular. Potatoes are often served in various forms as a side dish. A typical and popular dish in winter is kale. In the southern part of the Lüneburg Heath, asparagus is grown and enjoyed. For coffee, butter cake, cakes, or other desserts such as Welfenspeise are often enjoyed. If you want to cook in your vacation apartment or in your holiday home with modern facilities, you should get fresh, regional products from one of the many farm shops or at the market. This way, the food tastes especially good.
Fun and variety for the whole family
In the Elbhöhen-Wendland Nature Park, children and parents experience beautiful forests, the Elbe heights, streams, and heathlands, the state forest, and the hilly landscape of Drawehn. The nature park is home to numerous, sometimes rare, animal and plant species and invites you to take long walks. On rainy days, the Wendlandtherme in Gartow with its bathing landscape, adventure showers, outdoor pool, and sauna landscape is the perfect place for the whole family. Let yourself drift in one of the pleasantly warm pools while your children have fun on the giant slide and in the counter-current pool. The thermal bath includes a restaurant, so you can refresh yourself at any time. In beautiful Wendland, you can also rent a quiet vacation apartment on a farm where children and dogs are welcome. Here, your children can play with the pets, get to know farm animals, and play and romp undisturbed. Many of the offered apartments and holiday homes are modernly furnished and equipped with Wi-Fi, so you don't have to do without the internet during your vacation. Or would you rather have the vacation accommodation on the farm in the village so that the children can help take care of the animals? A wonderful farm vacation or active vacation - you decide!
Art and culture in the Wendland vacation region
If you are spending a vacation in a cozy house with a terrace or a private vacation apartment in a quiet location in Lower Saxony, for example in Damnatz, Lüdersburg, or Jameln, you should not miss the cultural highlights of the region. This is unique to Wendland: villages built in a circle. The famous round villages are still the typical form in some Wendland villages today. Nowhere else but in the Hanoverian Wendland does this special type of construction exist. You can convince yourself of the beauty of the old round villages, for example, in the round village of Lübeln. Every year between Pentecost and Ascension Day, handicrafts and art can be admired at over 100 exhibition venues in Wendland. The Lüchow-Dannenberg Museum Association includes 13 museums that collect, preserve, convey, and research. At the Wustrow Museum, for example, changing exhibitions on the recent history of Wendland, which deal with social and economic history topics as well as political events, are shown.
