We offer 7 fundamentally different holiday homes in and around the shepherd village of Vale, right at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. On the one hand, far from the hustle and bustle of civilization, on the other, just around the corner from Sibiu-Hermannstadt, the European Capital of Culture 2007..
A good choice for lovers of special places who want to spice up their Romania holiday with untouched nature, a touch of the past, and a pinch of Transylvanian tradition.
The village nestles on a slope overlooking the Transylvanian plateau. With no through traffic, in a quiet location, surrounded by the oldest beech primeval forest on the continent and a unique flora and fauna in the mountain meadows above. Alternatively, benefit from the central location in the heart of Romania for excursions in all directions.

••• CASA ZOLLO II •••
The holiday apartment is ideally suited for singles and couples. It is located at the very edge of the village, and the only through traffic consists of one or two horse carts bringing in hay from the neighboring hills. Expect custom-made furnishings, spotless cleanliness, and a calming view into the valley and wooded mountains. During the 4-year construction period, we had time and fun creatively designing the details.
The one-room apartment (28 m²) is on the ground floor of the main house Casa Zollo and has a separate entrance, its own terrace, kitchen, and bathroom. The furnishings include a double bed, LED TV (with German channels), Wi-Fi internet, and a kitchenette. This is fully equipped with refrigerator, gas stove, coffee maker, toaster, kettle, spices, and plenty of dishes.
On your arrival, you will find the bed freshly made. An extra bed for a 3rd person is possible for an additional fee.
The separate bathroom has a washing machine, toilet, washbasin, and shower. Hand and bath towels, shower gel, and soap are provided.
The furnishings are high-quality and carefully chosen, including sanitary facilities, kitchen appliances, mattress, and linens. All furniture, doors, and windows were custom-made. The solar-assisted central heating is controlled by a gas boiler; alternatively, we turn on the infrared panel, which, like a tiled stove, warms the bodies in the room and only indirectly the air.
From the spacious terrace (21 m²) you look out onto the lush green of wooded mountain slopes or down into the valley. A staircase leads into the fenced gardens ( m²), which border directly on the surrounding hills.
Here you can relax on another terrace, grill a steak on the built-in barbecue, and in the evening, by the open fire, toast the awakening crickets. Maybe you’ll just sit under an apple tree, listen to the birds, and let your thoughts come and go...

• Upon request, our cook will provide you with breakfast or take up the cooking spoon. She conjures up traditional menus fresh on the table at previously agreed times. Meat comes from our own livestock. Vegetarian? No problem.
• Products from local farmers such as: fresh milk straight from the udder, goat and sheep cheese, forest honey, homemade jam and zakusca, wine and schnapps, preserved vegetables.

••• The shepherd village Vale •••
... is remote enough for fox and hare to wish each other good night, yet only about 5 km from the highway that brings all of Transylvania’s sights closer. An asphalt road touches the village, but most of it winds up into the hills on cobblestones and footpaths. That is also why traditional structures and unspoiled hospitality have largely survived the advance of modernity. Horses, sheep, and poultry are still part of the village scene, and the farmers take up the scythe and plant potatoes, corn, and vegetables, which they preserve for the winter.
There is a children’s playground and a small family shop in the village square – more shops, restaurants, a bank with EC/Visa ATM, and a market with farm products can be found in the small town of Saliste, 2 km away. What is missing here can be found in Sibiu, 20 km away, at the Zibins market, in retail stores, or in department store chains like Real, Kaufland, or Lidl.
Some say that time has stood still here. That much is not perfect, nature is unique and untouched, and the breath of bygone times is felt in every corner. And that perhaps it is precisely this mix that creates the charm of the extraordinary, before it is swallowed up by the progress of civilization. Until then, take a look around.

••• We are neither classic private landlords •••
... nor trained tourism professionals. We live in Vale and work together in a small construction company, under whose direction the holiday houses were also built. Among them are two sophisticated new buildings, a shepherd’s hut, and two former farmhouses – thoroughly renovated with attention to detail, respect for the traditional style of the area, but also with modern building materials and contemporary living needs in mind. The result is the encounter of different times and cultures in six feel-good oases, each unique in a place where – we hope – the rush of the world will long make a detour.
After eight years of work, we put aside trowel and plane for a moment and breathe a sigh of relief. We host you as a team and are always available for problems or questions. Perhaps we can help with a tip or two, but we also master the art of discreet withdrawal.
From the income of the holiday houses (that is, your money), on the one hand, the ‘investor’ is served, on the other hand, administration and maintenance provide several families with a secure income. If you are cooked for, order products from local farmers, or shop at the village store, other villagers also benefit. Finally, we are planning a soup kitchen for the less well-off families in the village, which will also be financed from the income of the houses.
We maintain an atmosphere of free thinking and equal cooperation.

••• Transylvania •••
… is the land of the legendary places, the churches, castles, fortresses and monasteries. Only a few are known, such as the Dracula Castle in Bran, the Sphinx Megalith in the Bucegi Mountains or Sarmizegetusa, the capital of the ancient Dacian culture. But they are found everywhere: sometimes as a quiet gem on the edge of the road, as a monumental fortress on the safe rock, but also as a hand-adorned token of love to craftsmanship in a monastery in the forest. A trip can take you an hour or a day. Here are some examples for sights and tours in the area:
The open-air Marmelada swimming pool is just across the hill 20 walking minutes away, and so are five lakes in the valley. In 15 minutes you leave the village below you, passing dozens of hand-carved wooden sculptures in the Poiana Soarelui (sunny glade) on your ascent, to arrive at the mountain meadows and enjoy a unique view across the vastness of the Transylvanian Plain. In good weather, you get sweeping views to the mountain range beyond Sibiu.
The neighbor village of Sibiel hosts Romania’s most important museum for icons with reverse glass painting. From here, you walk along a wild stream to a secluded monastery in the midst of the forest, and further up into the mountains.
Connoisseurs are attracted to the mountain lake at Gura Raiului (13 km). It lies in a depression. The water is clear and in the evening, you can light a fire and watch the fish jump for mosquitoes. Anyone visiting this place won’t easily forget it.
If you are aiming really high, you can choose between two north-south passes across the Carpathians, both to visit in a day trip:
• The Transfagarasan – winding past steep rocks and a waterfall dozens of meters high. On the top of the pass, ‘Balea Lake’ awaits you with a hostel and the house of ice.
• The Transalpina – at the highest trafficable road across the Carpathians, sometimes even towers above the clouds. Created by the Romans in their campaign against the Dacians, she was rebuilt during World War II, then forgotten, and today winds through one of the few untouched mountain regions in Europe. The Transalpina starts at Saliste, just 2 km from Vale.
Via both routes you arrive at the southern part of the country, in Walachia, and make your way back through the Olt valley, the only north-south route through the Carpathians, passing ancient monasteries and some steep cliffs. Whoever doesn’t stop here must be in a real hurry.
When you’ve had enough of mountains and steep slopes, turn to the valley. The countryside is spotted with ancient fortified churches built by the Transylvanian Saxons up to 800 years ago.
One of their medieval cities, the European Capital of Culture Sibiu, lies just around the corner and to this day is a fountain of cultural diversity. The medieval fortifications embrace the old town with its historic alleys and restaurants, cafés and bars, some of them set in vaulted cellars or courtyards. During the summer, the town opens up to its visitors and regularly organizes events, ranging from cabaret and theater through open-air concerts to exhibitions of local crafts guilds.
The traditional village museum ASTRA on the outskirts of Sibiu also merits one or two glances: century-old log cabins, water mills, blacksmith shops and saw mills from all over the country were reconstructed true to the original.
From here it’s just a stone’s throw to the fortified church of Cisnadioara, established in the 13th century and one of the oldest Saxon buildings in Transylvania. It stands on an almost circular mountain top above the village.
After walking for hours you will feel your legs. In the saltwater lakes and spas of Ocna Sibiului (25 km away) you can soothe your aching bones in brine, stretch out in saltwater reading the newspaper, and then coat yourself in mud. The way back leads you past Cristian. Here, another fortified church gives you an impression of how centuries ago, people barricaded themselves against Mongols, Turks and Kuruc irregulars.
If you choose to delve deeper into the history of Romania you will hear about the Dacians. Similar to the Celts in Ireland, they are famous for their mystical traditions and particular skills. Even today the faithful flock to their places of worship, only ruins of which have survived.
The last Dacians are said to have taken refuge in the ‘Muntii Apuseni’ (40 km away), a sparsely populated region on the western border of Transylvania. Today however, this area is known for caves and abandoned mine tunnels, some of which run hundreds of meters through rock. Skeletons of dinosaurs and other prehistoric monsters are found in their depths even today. Early birds can explore this area on a day trip.
No matter which way you turn, you’ll experience amazing things - usually things you never expexted.

The shuttle from the airport, the rental car, but above all: a beautiful, well-maintained accommodation with the unique possibility of being entertained with the best Romanian food. And a top location, from where you can do everything (shopping, hiking, just relaxing in the garden), ... and much more

We are already the 2nd time in Romania and have already made in some houses of the landlords holiday and we just have to say it are all super great and always clean.... everything you need is there and even if something is empty, all the staff are very reliable and get it as quickly as possible.... in romania there is a lot worth seeing which you can experience, we also did that during our 2nd stay but romania is big and we still have a lot to do so we just booked our 3rd holiday... 1000 stars for you, you deserve them...

Everything was fine. Service on the part of the landlord, starting with the transfer and pick-up after the breakdown with the bicycle, as well as the furnishings and comfort of the holiday home could not have been better. The location in Vale is quiet, central and a good starting point for day trips to Transylvanian-Saxon fortified churches in the Sibiu-Sighisoara region. We drove approx. 1900 km with the rental Dacia, got to know the country and its people from different backgrounds and advise anyone who prefers a somewhat different holiday away from mass tourism to visit this country while it can still show a hint of its originality.

Recreation factor super !
If you are looking for peace and quiet, this is the place for you. A cosy and functionally furnished holiday flat. We had already booked a rental car in advance through the nice landlord Werner, with which our host then picked us up from the airport in Sibiu. The on-site support by Werner and Nicu was excellent. We covered 1500 km in our rented Passat during the 10 days. Whether Transalpina, Sibiu, Hunedoara, Brasov, Biertan etc., everything was beautiful, the castles, the landscape, the small Carpathian villages with their people and animals and last but not least the wonderful horse-drawn carriage ride with Nicu and his little son into the mountains. Transylvania is definitely worth a trip!!!

Holiday Apartment Romania / Vale Mr Konnert
We were looking for a week's holiday and found it. The holiday flat is very cosy and lovingly furnished, is very quiet and offers everything you need. The service provided by Mr Konnert and his team was very good and trouble-free. This was our first holiday in Romania and we will be back.
