The village of Vale is located in the center of the Marginimea Sibiului (Hermannstadt Border Area) – one of the most tradition-rich regions of Romania. It lies at the foot of the Cindrel Mountains, and the remains of a Dacian fortress bear witness to a turbulent past. The Dacians are said to have customs in common with the Irish Celts, and they settled here long before the arrival of the Roman legions. Here are some examples of excursions in the area:
In Saliste, a farm track starts through the oldest beech forest on the continent. It leads up to Poiana Soarelui (Sun Glade), where dozens of hand-carved wooden sculptures are scattered across the mountain meadows. They are the result of years of work by sculptors and carvers from all parts of the country in the 1960s. The view of the Transylvanian plain here is unique. In the neighboring village of Sibiel you will find the largest icon museum with reverse glass painting in Romania. Here you walk along a mountain stream to a monastery in the middle of the forest. Two villages further on you can marvel at the jumping fish in the mountain lake of Gura Raului, and on the way back, in the stork village of Cristian (Großau), you can stop by one of the oldest Saxon fortified churches. It gives an impression of how people barricaded themselves centuries ago against Tatars, Huns, Turks, and Kuruc irregulars.
Anyone who wants to take a closer look at the splendor of the Carpathians can choose between two passable north-south routes:
• the Transfagarasan – passing by a waterfall dozens of meters high and steeply rising cliffs. At the top of the pass is the mountain lake Balea Lac with a hostel made of ice.
• the Transalpina is the highest route across the Carpathians. Built by the Romans during the campaign against the Dacians, it was newly fortified by the German Wehrmacht during the World War, then fell into oblivion, and today presents one of the most unspoiled mountain regions in Europe.
In both cases, you reach Wallachia, the southern part of Romania, a climate zone influenced by the Mediterranean.
For the return journey, the Olt Valley, located between the two passes, is suitable; it is the only north-south passage through the mountains. Along the majestic river, numerous monasteries have settled over the centuries, and those who do not stop here are usually in a hurry.
If you have seen enough mountains and steep slopes, you can turn to the valley. Since then, German-Flemish serfs from the Archbishopric of Cologne settled in the Carpathian Arc and founded their own state. The Transylvanian Saxons were the first professing Lutherans in Europe and also offered protection to others persecuted for their religion. One of its first marketplaces, the European Capital of Culture Sibiu-Hermannstadt, has not shaken off the Middle Ages to this day. The old town, defensive towers and city walls have been largely restored, and right next to them bars in vaults, hard rock cafés and (survival) art have developed. In summer, the city opens itself to its visitors and organizes various events on the central Great Square, from small-scale art and theater to open-air concerts and exhibitions of local craft guilds.
One or two visits are worthwhile to the ASTRA Museum of Traditional Village Art in the "Young Forest" on the edge of the city. Here, centuries-old log cabins, blacksmith workshops, water and saw mills from all parts of the country are exhibited. From here, it is just a stone’s throw to the fortified church of Michelsberg (Cisnadioara), a Protestant fortified church from the . It stands on a circular hilltop above the village, which was inhabited by Transylvanian Saxons until the fall of Ceausescu.
After you have wandered through the area for hours, you will feel it in your legs. In the salt and health spas of Salzburg (Ocna Sibiului), you can soothe aching bones, read the newspaper while floating in saltwater, or treat yourself to a professional massage or healing mud treatment at the adjacent spa center. The place has been considered a health resort for rheumatic diseases since then.
The Western Carpathians (Muntii Apuseni), together with the eastern Carpathian belt, enclose the Transylvanian plateau. In this wild and partly hard-to-reach region, the elders still tell stories today about the Dacians and their king Decebalus, who once united the quarrelling tribes and defeated the Roman legions. Today the region is known for its unique landscape and the many caves and abandoned tunnels, which sometimes extend hundreds of meters into the rock, and in whose depths skeletons of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals have been found. If you get up early, you can get a taste of this exciting area on a day trip.
Wherever you turn, you will experience something. Usually also things you would not have expected.
