Geographical Location and Setting
Region: Plakias is located in the southern part of the Rethymno regional unit, approximately 36 to 40 kilometers south of Rethymno city.
Seacoast: It lies on a large crescent bay on the Libyan Sea, offering breathtaking views and a distinctly different, more laid-back atmosphere than the resorts on the northern coast of Crete.
Landscape: The village is nestled in a fertile valley formed at the exit of the Kotsifos River, surrounded by high, dramatic mountains to the north. The combination of the tranquil sea, the sandy bay, and the rugged mountain backdrop makes for a picturesque destination.
2. Character and Amenities
Originally a small fishing jetty and a few houses, Plakias has developed into a popular, well-organized resort. While it can be a busy tourist destination, it has retained a unique charm and is a favorite for families, independent travelers, and those seeking a quieter experience.
The Village Center: The main part of Plakias, where Daskalogianni Street is located, is well-equipped for visitors. You will find small hotels, apartments, tavernas, beachfront restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, a pharmacy, and cash machines. The village also has a small marina/harbor.
History: The village's name is said to come from the Greek word plaka or plakes (meaning "slab" or "flat stone"), likely due to the large number of stones found in the area. The surrounding mountain villages, such as Myrthios and Sellia, have recorded histories dating back to the Byzantine era (10th century).
3. Beaches and Coastal Attractions
Plakias Beach (Yialia): The main attraction is the magnificent Plakias beach, which is one of the longest in Crete, stretching for about 1.3 kilometers. It has golden-hued sand and refreshing blue-green waters. It is well-organized with sun loungers, umbrellas, and water sports, but its size ensures there is still plenty of space for everyone.
The eastern end, beneath the huge vertical cliffs of Paligremnos, is often used by naturists and is a popular spot for rock climbing.
Nearby Beaches: The area is a fantastic base for exploring other nearby coves and beaches, including the sheltered Souda Beach, and the beautiful beaches of Damnoni, Ammoudi, and the scuba diver's favorite, Schinaria.
Preveli: A short distance east is the famous Palm Beach of Preveli, at the exit of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, which is accessible by road or by boat from Plakias harbor.
4. Local Sights and Activities
Gorges: Plakias provides easy access to spectacular hiking trails through the Kourtaliotiko Gorge and the Kotsifos Gorge, which are noted for their natural beauty, high cliffs, and unique flora and fauna.
Preveli Monastery: The historic Preveli Monastery, which played a crucial role in Cretan resistance movements during the Ottoman and Nazi occupations, is located on a hill overlooking the sea and is a significant cultural site to visit.
Mountain Villages: A short trip up the hill to nearby villages like Myrthios offers traditional tavernas with spectacular, panoramic views of the entire Plakias bay.
The location is ideal for those who enjoy beaches, hiking, and exploring a less commercialized, yet well-facilitated, part of Crete.
