The lively centre of Ameland is the ideal starting point for exploring the island. Once characterised by powerful commanders, the village bears witness to the strong presence of the whaling captains who had a lasting influence on the streetscape. The characteristic houses from the 17th and 18th centuries still radiate the splendour of the North Sea hunt.
Tip: Look out for the "mouse teeth" in the gables. These are two rows of pointed stones and mark the houses of the commanders. If you only see one row, you are standing in front of the former house of a helmsman. But Nes is far more than just a historical homage.
Nes, the capital of Ameland, offers many beautiful sights. These include the ferry and yacht harbour. The marina is open from 1 April to 1 November and is accessible for small boats. Due to the shallow water at the harbour entrance - only 0.6 to 0.8 metres at low tide - the harbour is not suitable for large ships. Let your gaze wander over the many ships.
