Location and surroundings of object
the centre of Istria and an old crossroads of roads. Right at the crossroads at the foot of the small town is Kalvarija from 1720. Žminj was a town of the county of Pazin-Pisino since 1368, which was conquered by the Venetians for only 1 year in 1617. Of the town bulwarks from the 15th century, the smaller part of the fortress, one of the four round towers, a wing of the fortress, the outer part of the walls that protected the houses of the villagers, and the well-preserved public cistern from 1863 are visible today. The centre of the town is dominated by the large Baroque, three-winged parish church of St. Mihovil, built in 1625 on the foundations of the earlier one from the 12th century. There are also three small frescoed churches in Žminj - the Church of the Holy Trinity painted in 1471, the Church of St. Cross located in the cemetery, and the Church of St. Anton Opata dating from 1381. At the entrance to the town there is also the small church of St. Bartol, around which the Bartulja is traditionally held on the last Saturday of August, the biggest village festival that Istrians and their guests do not miss.
