Montague , Prince Edward Island , Canada

"Montague The Beautiful" Montague the Beautiful, as the name suggests, is one of the prettiest towns on the Island. Graced with a tranquil river, lovely tree-lined streets and stately homes, it is a wonderful environment for residents and visitors alike. Montague's location in the heart of Kings County also makes it a regional centre of business and commerce, an excellent place for investment. The town itself is located along the Montague River in what used to be known as Township Lots 52 and 59. It lies approximately six miles upstream from Cardigan Bay, allowing for easy access by water to the Northumberland Strait and the Atlantic Ocean. The river bisects the town from east to west, providing excellent small port access for transport, fishing and recreation, as well as enhancing the town's scenic beauty. Kings County is the easternmost county of Prince Edward Island, and Montague lies considerably south of the main body of the Province. Its geographic position--in close proximity to the provincial capital, Charlottetown, and various important centres in Kings County--has contributed strongly to its growth and development. The town is divided almost evenly by highway route #4 in a north-south direction, linking it to many of the outlying communities. The surrounding area is also quite picturesque, and has been termed the "Hills and Harbours" area by the Province's tourist authourity. It is characterized by rolling countryside, peaceful rivers, picturesque beaches and vibrant colours: the pristine white of winter snow, the brilliant violet of the lupins that line the roadways in spring, the green of the summer grass and fields, and the kaleidescope of hues in the autumn leaves. Our back roads maintain the same colour throughout the year - the famous rich red which is characteristic of the Island. Much of the land is used for agricultural purposes, though there is a substantial amount of woodland, allowing for hiking, camping and bird- watching.

Additional Information

"Beaches and Lighthouses in the Montague Area." Eastern PEI is famous for its gentle shoreline, abundant with sandy beaches and striking lighthouses. Many of the public beaches are a haven for the sunbather with large, graceful sand dunes. This part of the Island generally gets less rain than the rest, so there will be lots of opportunities to spend a sunny day at the beach with the family. Alternatively, you could do a little exploring - discovering our historic and beautiful lighthouses is akin to treasure hunting. Below are some beaches and lighthouses that you will find on the map. But keep your eyes open - you might find a private little haven off the map that is perfect for you! Beaches Brudenell River Provincial Park Roseneath. From Montague, follow Rte. 4 north to Rte. 3 and head east. Sites include a Wildflower Garden and a Salt Marsh Community. Regular programs are offered, including campfires and interpretive programs. Resort and camping facilities are available. Vernon Bridge From Montague, take Rte. 3 south-west, then turning east on the Trans Canada. This tidal flat area is home to a number of shorebirds, and canoeists will find sheltered conditions. Orwell Bay/Lord Selkirk Provincial Park From Montague, take Rte. 210 south-west. Canoeists can launch at Lord Selkirk National Park and will find good conditions. The whole bay is a feeding stop for migrating wild fowl, especially in the fall. The park has a good beach with a campground and facilities. Point Prim and Pinette Provincial Park From Montague, take Rte. 210 south-west, then head south-east on the Trans Canada. Take Rte. 209 south to Point Prim. The oldest lighthouse on the Island still operates here. Picnic tables are nearby. In the park, picnic tables, toilets and change houses are available during the summer. Wood Islands From Montague, take Rte. 3 west or Rte. 210 until they reach the Trans-Canada. Follow the TCH to its end. A beach is located behind the buildings at the Ferry Terminal. In the provincial park there is a unique playground, a lighthouse, and good photography opportunities. Poverty Beach From Montague, take Rte. 17 south to Murray Harbour North and take the side road. A good place for sunbathing, with white sand, sweeping dunes and lots of privacy. Panmure Island Provincial Park From Montague, take Rte. 17, heading east then north on Rte. 347 through Gaspereaux. On the Cardigan Bay side the beach is white sand, and on the other side of the road you will find red sand beaches. One of the Island's finest supervised beaches for swimming and clam digging. Changing, washroom and shower facilities are available, and there is an adjacent campground. Launching Point From Montague, take Rte. 4 north, then heading east on Rte. 311 through Cardigan to Launching. An excellent beach, with interesting varieties of kelp and seaweed. Spry Point From Montague, take Rte. 4 north, and head east on Rte. 310. This features an ecologically designed bio-shelter powered by wind and sun, known as the Ark, which is now a lovely inn and restaurant. Greenwich Beach From Montague, take Rte. 4 then 313 north, heading west at St. Peter's. Miles and miles of sand dunes - a haven for those who like private sun-bathing. Lighthouses Lower Montague From Montague, take Rte. 17, passing through Lower Montague, instead of heading east to Gaspereaux.
