The beginnings of Todtmoos are based on a religious myth, according to which a Marian apparition led to a pilgrimage and the founding of the place. The name "Todtmoos" derives from former moors where apparently poisonous mosses grew. The baroque pilgrimage church "Unser Lieben Frau" on Schönbühl is one of the highlights of the region and is a popular pilgrimage site. The neighboring rectory from 1749/33 is often referred to as a "palace." Initially simply designed by the architect Johann Michael Beer von Bleichten, it was later splendidly rebuilt by Johann Kaspar Bagnato and served the abbots of the powerful St. Blasien monastery in the Waldshut district Waldshut as a summer residence. Definitely worth seeing are the magnificent design with the ceiling painting by Johann Anton Morath and the so-called "Fürstenzimmer" with elaborate doors and a faience stove. In the Mättle district, you will find the "Hoffnungsstollen" visitor mine, which offers interesting insights into the more industrial past of the region. In "Heimethues Todtmoos," the local history museum of the municipality and the oldest preserved building, you will gain access to the history of your vacation spot.
