Travel guide Tannheimer Tal
Fast and convenient to the Tannheimer Valley
Located at an altitude of 1,100 meters above sea level, the Tannheimer Valley lies amidst the Allgäu Alps in the Austrian federal state of Tyrol. The high valley is idyllically framed by the Tannheimer Mountains. You can easily and eco-friendly travel from Germany to your holiday apartment or private house in your holiday region by train via Munich. From the train station in Sonthofen in the Allgäu, it is about 25 kilometers by bus to
Tannheim. There are also connections from the train station in Reutte in Tyrol and from Pfronten in the Allgäu. By car, you can reach your accommodation in the Tannheimer Valley via the A7 motorway via Ulm and Kempten as well as from Munich via
Garmisch-Partenkirchen and further via
Ehrwald and Weißenbach am Lech. Traveling from further away is conveniently possible via the airports in Munich and Stuttgart, each about two hours by car. There are also some good flight connections to the closer airports in Memmingen, Friedrichshafen, and Innsbruck.
High in the mountains – cool and cold
The climate here is cold in winter and cool in summer. After all, your accommodation in Tannheim is located in a high valley at 1,100 meters above sea level. The average temperatures in summer do not rise above 20 °C. In the winter months, double-digit minus temperatures are not uncommon – perfect for a
ski holiday in the Tannheimer Valley. Snowfall guaranteed. The cool summers offer ideal conditions for mountain sports in the green. Climbing, mountaineering, mountain biking, downhill, and extensive hikes are then on the program – without breaking a sweat. Enjoy your
holiday with a dog in Tyrol in the summer and take your four-legged family members with you to the mountains. Nowhere else will your dog have as much exercise as here. Even in midsummer, remember to bring warm clothes, as it can get quite cold at night. A holiday home in a good location with a warming fireplace is just right for the whole family.
Hearty and delicious – The Allgäu cuisine
What has been served for many generations in the Tannheimer Valley is a hearty and tasty Alpine cuisine. The basic ingredients have always been: fresh milk, cheese, flour, and eggs. The farm women made tasty pasta dishes from these, first and foremost the "Kasspatzen," Allgäu cheese spaetzle. These are prepared with lean raw milk cheese. Other delicious variations include spinach and sauerkraut spaetzle as well as sauerkraut pastries. A version with a high potato content is the Schupfnudel – often fried and served with sauerkraut. In the cool mountain climate of the Alps, warm soups are also very popular on the menus of restaurants. Try the roast dumpling soup with boiled sausage or Flädle soup with pancake strips. The original cuisine was a poor-people’s cuisine. Meat was only served on special occasions. However, the meadows and forests of the region offer excellent beef and game. In the vicinity of your holiday home, inexpensive holiday apartment, or stylish chalet, some top chefs have taken it upon themselves to refine the regional specialties. The fact that good meat comes from happy cows can be experienced every spring and autumn at the Almabtrieb (Alpine cattle drive). At these "major events," things are lively in all villages. Traditionally, the Tyroleans drink a spicy beer with their meal – naturally from the s´Höf Bräuhaus in Tannheim. Here, in a cozy atmosphere, you can enjoy the local beer specialties with a snack or traditional dish.
The Tannheimer Valley in summer and winter
The Tannheimer Valley in winter: Even in the valley, there is guaranteed snow during the cold months. The average snow depth in the valley is half a meter, while over a meter of snow is found in the surrounding mountains. Six ski areas attract alpine winter sports enthusiasts to the Tannheimer Valley. In
Nesselwängle,
Grän, Tannheim, and Schattwald near Zöblen, as well as another ski area in Jungholz, 55 kilometers of well-groomed pistes that can be reached via 20 ski lifts beckon. Relax on 140 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails, winter hiking trails, and toboggan runs, for example, in Schattwald. A special experience awaits you at the International Balloon Festival. You have the opportunity to ride in one of the participating balloons and look down on the slopes. Depending on the wind direction, a ride over Neuschwanstein Castle is possible. During the ride, there is no wind in the balloon basket – an absolute highlight during your holidays, as you ascend above the valley. By the way, balloon rides in the Tannheimer Valley can be booked all year round, even outside festival times.
In summer: The holiday resort offers hikers many kilometers of hiking trails for easy, medium, or challenging tours and hikes, for example, through the Almdorf (alpine pasture village). Huts are available for overnight stays on multi-day tours. Furthermore, via ferratas and prepared climbing routes, mountain bike and downhill trails, as well as developed bicycle paths for cycling and nearby regular hiking trails tempt visitors. Cool off with a dip in one of the mountain lakes in the Tannheimer Valley. Hike to Haldensee, Vilsalpsee, Traualpsee, Höfersee, Moorweiher Floschen, and Lache. Numerous events and sports events take place at Haldensee and the Vilsalpsee nature reserve during the summer months. Challenge yourself at the Bike Marathon, 24-hour hiking event, or the Lakes Run. Relax at the Nature Film Days, Sacred Heart Fire, and the Almauftriebe (Alpine cattle drives). The Nature Film Days are intended to raise awareness for the protection of the forests and landscapes of Tyrol and the Allgäu Alps. It is the responsibility of the local people and visitors to do everything possible to maintain and preserve this wonderful cultural landscape. Other activities around your apartment or private holiday accommodation in the form of a dreamy country house in the Tannheimer Valley complete the leisure offer: hang gliding, paragliding, tennis, horseback riding, carriage rides, fishing, and angling. Boredom is not an option here. Art enthusiasts are drawn to the 31 Baroque churches and chapels in the valley. The pride of the communities is the Löffler-Geläut in the St. Nikolaus Church in Tannheim, dating back to 1561. The three-ton bell can be heard throughout the entire valley. Look forward to your personal holiday experience!
