The marketplace in Neustadt, with its impressive fountain, is the central hub of the city. Located at the marketplace is the Gothic collegiate church – the landmark of Neustadt – from the 14th century. A unique feature is the partition wall inside, dividing the church into Catholic and Protestant sections. Also at the marketplace are the Baroque-style town hall from the 18th century and the Renaissance-style gabled house from the 16th century. In 1859, this building housed a bookstore with "revolutionary literature." Wander from the marketplace through Hintergasse and Mittelgasse with their half-timbered houses and wine taverns in idyllic courtyards. The oldest of these taverns dates back to the 15th century (House No. 3). Friedrichstraße, Kellereistraße, and Hauptstraße invite you for a car-free shopping spree. Besides the old town, numerous attractions in the vicinity of Neustadt are accessible by hiking or a short drive – notably numerous castles and fortresses, such as Haardter Schlössel and the Winzingen Castle ruins, Wolfsburg, and Trifels Imperial Castle. The landmark of the region is Hambach Castle. More on this under highlights.
The 85-kilometer-long German Wine Route is considered one of the oldest tourist routes in the country. The starting point is at the German Wine Gate in Schweigen-Rechtenbach near the French border. Passing numerous wineries and winding through the vineyards, the route leads to the House of the German Wine Route in Bockenheim. The wineries invite you to tastings and offer a variety of regional products in their farm shops. A unique way to enjoy the landscape is a ride on the historic Kuckucksbähnel, an old steam train that runs between Neustadt main train station and Elmstein. Of cultural-historical interest is Hambach Castle in the Neustadt district of Hambach. The castle is considered the cradle of democracy in Germany. In 1832, the so-called Hambach Festival took place here. The origins of the former robber baron castle date back to the 11th century. An exhibition at the castle provides insights into the background and consequences of the festival. The exhibition is suitable for all age groups. Now book an accommodation or an apartment, a house, a vacation home, or an apartment with a terrace for your relaxing holiday in the wine village of Haardt or in Sehnke, tailored to your personal preferences.
Admittedly, Neustadt an der Weinstraße is more of a destination for connoisseurs, whether it's the food, wine, architecture, or nature. However, when it comes to the latter, it can be combined into a wonderful family vacation – provided the kids enjoy hiking or biking. The scenic Kraut-und-Rüben bike path, the German Wine Route bike path, and the Palatia bike path between Lambrecht and Speyer run through the city. On foot, you can explore the Palatinate Wine Trail through the vineyards. Especially in autumn, when the vine leaves turn red and yellow, hiking in the region is a memorable experience. The hiking trails are also perfect for a vacation with dogs or pets along the German Wine Route. Numerous nature and amusement parks in the area provide fun and excitement. The Kurpfalz Park in Wachenheim in the Palatinate Forest offers adventure playgrounds, a zoo, and bird of prey shows for the little ones. Consider a trip to Gimmeldingen as well.
The traditional cuisine of the Palatinate is known for being hearty and rustic. It was former Chancellor Helmut Kohl who made the Palatinate dish Saumagen internationally famous. The recipe involves stuffing a pig's stomach with potatoes, pork, and sausage meat and cooking it until done. In the old town's wine taverns, you can sample typical regional recipes. Try the roasted blood sausage with fried potatoes, Dampfnudeln with white wine sauce, or Flääschnepp, which are dumplings made of veal and pork served with (very spicy!) horseradish sauce. Now, let's talk about wine. After all, everything revolves around wine on the Wine Route. Riesling is considered the king of white wines, with about 5,500 hectares planted with this grape variety. You'll also find excellent Pinot varieties like Spätburgunder and Dornfelder, as well as Portugieser. Throughout the year, but especially during the grape harvest, numerous festivals take place along the Wine Route. In Neustadt, the German Wine Queen is crowned every year. During this time of year, the air is filled with the scent of fermenting must, and the new wine is served as Federweißer. Many wineries promise delicious drinks during your journey in one of Germany's most beautiful regions, tailored to your personal preferences!
Culture enthusiasts will find several museums and galleries within walking distance of their holiday home in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, all worth a visit. The city museum Villa Böhm, housed in a period villa, features a permanent exhibition on the city's history. During the summer, theater and concert events take place in the villa's park. In 2001, a museum dedicated solely to the work of Otto Dill, the most important Palatinate painter born in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, opened its doors. The historic Herrenhof houses the Wine Growing Museum Getreidekasten, located in a former grain store. The state of Rhineland-Palatinate has been managing the estate as a state vineyard since the 1970s.
Neustadt an der Weinstraße is located in the Rhine-Neckar region in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, nestled between the Palatinate Forest and the Palatinate Rhine Plain west of Speyer.
