Holiday home at the Cat Tree

We spent a very nice vacation at the Ferienhaus zum Katzenbaum with our grandchildren at the beginning of August. For our grandchildren and our dog, it was an adventure vacation. Right by the forest with great hiking trails, it was a relaxing vacation. We all had a lot of fun.

Plenty of space in a great location, very nice host.

The loving description of the vacation apartment motivated us to book a week of vacation here. One can tell that the landlady, Mrs. Ruthig, is passionate about it and cares about the well-being of the guests. Thus, we felt welcome from the very first moment. The apartment has everything one needs, the kitchen is well-equipped, and everything was very clean. The beautiful large garden offers play opportunities for children of all ages (playhouse, sandbox, swing, trampoline, basketball hoop, . . .), and the dogs can romp in the fenced area. The location is a dream for those seeking peace, very rural and quiet with great views. We enjoy hiking and could set off directly from the vacation apartment, as the "Rockenberger Urwaldpfad" practically passes right by the front door. After a short drive, you reach many other great hiking trails, which are all excellently marked and rightly referred to as "unmissable." The information material provided in the vacation apartment or the landlord herself, who is available to help, assists in planning. As a balance to hiking, a visit to Trier or Saarburg, an excursion to Erbeskopf with a summer toboggan run, or to one of the nearby swimming pools is recommended. We had a great week, are really impressed with the Hunsrück, and will gladly book with Ms. Ruthig again if we come to this area once more. We wholeheartedly recommend this apartment.

Great experience

A wonderful new experience in the Eagle's Nest. The apartment offers a lot of space. Everything is perfect. The landscape and the view are a dream! I was really skeptical about the offline vacation. Is it all true? A clear YES. I haven't slept this well in ages like in the Eagle's Nest! I am now so convinced that I threw our TV out of the bedroom at home, along with the WiFi TV receiver. I also turn off my phone or leave it in the kitchen. The hosts are super friendly and helpful. My 6-year-old daughter loved it so much that she asked if we could rent the apartment. We will gladly come back.

Which sights are there in Hunsrück?

Discover the Most Beautiful Attractions

The Hunsrück region offers numerous excursion destinations with historical attractions that are easily accessible for day trips. The splendid nature has developed positively in recent years as monocultures of forestry slowly revert to mixed forests. In the forests, you can encounter rare animals such as the black woodpecker, wildcat, and fire salamander. Along the Moselle, there are many beautiful small villages where you can taste wine and stay directly with the winemakers. From your affordable vacation apartment, visit gems like Bernkastel-Kues, Traben-Trarbach, or Cochem. Castles and palaces here are visible witnesses of the Middle Ages to this day. Burg Balduinseck, the water castle ruin Baldenau, Grimburg castle complex, and Burg Dill are worthwhile excursion destinations. In Kastellaun, there is an old castle ruin that is very worth seeing. Visit Bad Kreuznach with its picturesque old town and the houses on the bridge. Simmern has a historical site from Roman times to show. The local bastion Römerberg is part of the former city fortifications. Interesting insights into history are provided by the Celtic settlement Altburg. Excavations in the 1970s uncovered the remains of a late Iron Age hillfort here. In the open-air museum, reconstructed houses from that time are on display. Idar-Oberstein is the center of German gem cutters and goldsmiths. In the German Gemstone Museum, you can admire valuable stones and minerals from all over the world.

What do you need to experience in Hunsrück?

Highlights for a Vacation in the Mountains

A very special experience is offered by the Hunsrück Game Reserve. In this park, numerous animals such as bison, bear, fallow deer, emu, and meerkat are kept under conditions as natural as possible on an area of almost 100 hectares. As a "zookeeper for a day," you can help feed and care for the animals directly in the enclosures. The falconry demonstrates the flying skills of birds of prey every day. You can admire eagles, falcons, and owls. If you plan your vacation in a vacation house or apartment, for example in Reckershausen, Emmelshausen, Mörsdorf, Morbach, or Mastershausen, for the winter, you can use the ski resort at Erbeskopf for Alpine skiing or enjoy the leisure and winter sports center at Peterskopf near Nonnweiler. A very well-maintained cross-country ski trail can be found on the ridge path "Idarwald." A particularly beautiful hike is promised by the premium hiking trail Nohener-Nahe loop. The "Dream Loops" hiking trails are particularly beautiful routes that are carefully planned and signposted. In the Saar-Hunsrück hiking region, there are a total of 111 of these premium hiking trails. Rent a cozy vacation accommodation or a chicly furnished apartment (FeWo) or a house with a balcony and terrace and explore the surroundings of the national park, idyllic bike paths, and opportunities for excursions. The dream of a personal timeout full of relaxation in the unique Hunsrück-Nahe region comes true!

What can you experience in Hunsrück with children?

Family Vacation in a Hunsrück Vacation House

Westerwald, Taunus, Eifel, and Hunsrück together form the Rhenish Slate Mountains. Here you can take extensive hikes and ski in the winter. Book a cozy vacation house for your family, offering plenty of space for playing and relaxing. Many landlords offer WiFi as a free addition. A quiet location, a garden, and perhaps a castle nearby make the accommodation a little paradise. Perhaps you are planning a vacation with a dog in Hunsrück, as you like to have your beloved pet around. When booking the vacation accommodation, ask whether pets or dogs are allowed. For children, a vacation on a farm can be a fantastic experience. They are allowed to feed and pet the animals and learn a lot about everyday life in the countryside. Recommended destinations for children include the Simmern leisure pool, the German Doll and Bear Museum in Sankt Goar, or the stream educational trail in Gemünden. In Morbach, there is a heated outdoor pool, considered one of the most beautiful facilities in the area. In Holzbach, the Höhenhof attracts visitors with attractions such as farmer's golf, a barefoot path, and a reed maze. You can hike on the dream loops of the area, such as the Masdascher Burgherrenweg, or mountain bike on the bike trails. Modeled after Nepalese suspension bridges, the "Geierlay Suspension Bridge" swings from one bridgehead to the other and is perfect for vertigo-free vacations.

Where can I eat out in Hunsrück?

Eating and Drinking in the Rhineland Style

On a vacation between the Rhine and Moselle, you will get to know the delicious cuisine in the Palatinate. From the private vacation accommodation or the apartment in the woods, start a trip to the region's winemakers to participate in a wine tasting or to restock your home supply. The Mosel-Saar area is well-known throughout Germany for its high-quality wines, which thrive excellently in the valley between the Hunsrück and Eifel. Traditional dishes such as stuffed dumplings, the original Hunsrück Schwenkbraten, or game dishes are available in the well-maintained inns. If you want to cook in your vacation home, choose an apartment with an attached kitchen. Shop at the weekly markets or directly from the farmers on the farm. Specialties such as game are available in specialty stores or from local hunters. The regional brand SooNahe is an association of local producers committed to sustainable, healthy food production. In your accommodation, enjoy a cozy breakfast, lunch, or dinner with delicious ingredients.

What is a must-see in Hunsrück?

Art and Culture for Connoisseurs and Enthusiasts

Numerous cultural events take place in the Hunsrück area. Every year in Idar-Oberstein, the Gemstone Prize is awarded and the German Gemstone Queen is crowned. Since 1977, the Lott Festival has been held with a wide range of music genres. At Nature One, electronic dance music is played. It is the largest festival of its kind in Europe and attracts many visitors. Hunsrück is rich in archaeological treasures. The Archaeology Association ARRATA e. V. addresses this by organizing numerous events such as the Hunsrück Archaeology Days at the Schmidtburg ruins and the Hunsrück Colloquium. On guided hikes from the vacation house to architectural and archaeological monuments, you will learn interesting facts about the artifacts found. The Schinderhannes Cycling Trail hosts the Hunsrück Marathon every year in August. At the Schinderhannes Festivals in Simmern, you can experience theater performances, music, and dance. From the private vacation apartment in Rhineland-Palatinate, make a detour to Trier. In the Simeonstift Museum in Trier, you can admire art and cultural treasures from the early modern period to the present. The baroque Palais Walderdorff presents contemporary painting, graphics, sculpture, and photography.
