Which sights are there on Föhr?

From Medieval Churches to Grandmother's Windmills

The most famous landmarks and tourist attractions on Föhr are the well-preserved windmills that define the island's landscape. The windmills are mentioned as early as the 15th century. Two of the mills are located in Wyk, including one on the grounds of the Frisian Museum. Three more stand in the communities of Wrixum, Oldsum, and Borgsum. The mill in Wrixum houses a small museum and a restaurant. Except for the mills in the mentioned community and the so-called post mill in the Frisian Museum, the mills are private. However, they still offer a picturesque view from the outside, and perhaps one of the mills is located right next to your holiday home? The island's long and rich history is also evidenced by several medieval churches from the 12th and 13th centuries. Since the Reformation, the churches have been Protestant. In Wyk-Boldixum, you will find St. Nicolai Church, and in Nieblum, St. Johannis Church. A trip to Süderende leads you to St. Laurentii Church. Special attractions can be found in the small cemeteries of the churches. There, you will find so-called "speaking gravestones," which extensively narrate the life stories of the deceased, providing insight into the island life of past centuries.

The Island's Greatest Asset is the Vastness of Nature

Regular guests appreciate the tranquility of the island and the breathtaking landscape of the North Sea. Föhr is a green island. And especially outside the peak season, the connoisseurs come. Things are quiet then. Life has its own rhythm. Holiday homes with saunas are highly sought after in winter. After long beach walks, there is hardly anything more relaxing than enjoying the cozy warmth of a sauna – except perhaps a cup of Frisian tea by the window, looking out at the windswept sea. This is beach vacation Frisian style. Do not miss a trip to the Wadden Sea. Get to know the diverse nature of this extraordinary landscape. Tours provide deeper insights into the flora and fauna of the tidal sea around the North Frisian Islands. The geographical location is perfect for mudflat hiking. During mudflat walks across the sandbanks, you can observe lugworms, shells, and wading birds. Depending on the tide, it is even possible to walk to the mainland or to the Halligen. You can also bring your loyal four-legged friend along. A tour to one of the other North Frisian Islands such as Hallig Hooge, the "Queen of the Halligen," is a special experience. The small community with just about 100 residents lives directly with the tides. During storm surges, it's "land under." Then the Hallig is flooded except for the Warften, the elevated mounds on which the few houses stand. Also, visit the neighboring islands of Föhr, Amrum, and Sylt, and plan a trip to the eastern mainland to Dagebüll. Perhaps combine this with a small journey to the Danish border.

The range of cultural events is particularly extensive during the summer season: The annual multi-day jazz festival attracts many visitors to the island. Located a forty-five-minute ferry ride off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein, the island of Föhr lies amidst the Wadden Sea.
