The most famous landmarks and tourist attractions on Föhr are the well-preserved windmills that define the island's landscape. The windmills are mentioned as early as the 15th century. Two of the mills are located in Wyk, including one on the grounds of the Frisian Museum. Three more stand in the communities of Wrixum, Oldsum, and Borgsum. The mill in Wrixum houses a small museum and a restaurant. Except for the mills in the mentioned community and the so-called post mill in the Frisian Museum, the mills are private. However, they still offer a picturesque view from the outside, and perhaps one of the mills is located right next to your holiday home? The island's long and rich history is also evidenced by several medieval churches from the 12th and 13th centuries. Since the Reformation, the churches have been Protestant. In Wyk-Boldixum, you will find St. Nicolai Church, and in Nieblum, St. Johannis Church. A trip to Süderende leads you to St. Laurentii Church. Special attractions can be found in the small cemeteries of the churches. There, you will find so-called "speaking gravestones," which extensively narrate the life stories of the deceased, providing insight into the island life of past centuries.
Regular guests appreciate the tranquility of the island and the breathtaking landscape of the North Sea. Föhr is a green island. And especially outside the peak season, the connoisseurs come. Things are quiet then. Life has its own rhythm. Holiday homes with saunas are highly sought after in winter. After long beach walks, there is hardly anything more relaxing than enjoying the cozy warmth of a sauna – except perhaps a cup of Frisian tea by the window, looking out at the windswept sea. This is beach vacation Frisian style. Do not miss a trip to the Wadden Sea. Get to know the diverse nature of this extraordinary landscape. Tours provide deeper insights into the flora and fauna of the tidal sea around the North Frisian Islands. The geographical location is perfect for mudflat hiking. During mudflat walks across the sandbanks, you can observe lugworms, shells, and wading birds. Depending on the tide, it is even possible to walk to the mainland or to the Halligen. You can also bring your loyal four-legged friend along. A tour to one of the other North Frisian Islands such as Hallig Hooge, the "Queen of the Halligen," is a special experience. The small community with just about 100 residents lives directly with the tides. During storm surges, it's "land under." Then the Hallig is flooded except for the Warften, the elevated mounds on which the few houses stand. Also, visit the neighboring islands of Föhr, Amrum, and Sylt, and plan a trip to the eastern mainland to Dagebüll. Perhaps combine this with a small journey to the Danish border.
Looking for a family-friendly holiday accommodation and want to bring your dog? No problem, as the four-legged friend is part of the family. On Föhr, you will find holiday homes and apartments from private owners that offer space for the entire family, as well as accommodations specifically for a vacation with a dog. Moreover, your children will enjoy beautiful holidays in a fantastic location with the opportunity to experience adventurous mudflat hiking. Nothing stands in the way of a special and unforgettable family vacation. The numerous Frisian houses with their typical thatched roofs are also worth seeing. Plan a bike tour along the island villages and places on the well-maintained bike paths of the island when the weather is good, and enjoy the nature. You can end this excursion with refreshing swimming fun or a great sea view from a restaurant of your choice. Pure relaxation! Föhr offers plenty of space for walking, cycling, and numerous beach activities, with (almost) no age restrictions. Family-friendly apartments are usually located in a quiet area yet close enough to the beaches or the promenade. For a multi-generational vacation, barrier-free accommodations are also available. The child-friendly holiday accommodations are equipped with cribs, secured sockets, playrooms and toys, and a washing machine. Föhr also offers numerous children's programs and recreational activities during the season. There's also plenty of fun in the water for the whole family at the Aquaföhr Wellness and Adventure Center. Here, both young and old will have a great time!
Föhr has plenty of cafés, bistros, and restaurants to suit every taste, often not far from your accommodation. Especially in Wyk, you will find everything from modern to cozy and from budget-friendly to upscale. The range includes ice cream cafés to trendy beach bars, from traditional inns to fine Italian restaurants. In Wyk, the culinary scene of Föhr is concentrated. You can reach the restaurants and bars on foot from your apartment or holiday home. But even in the smaller villages of Nieblum or Oldsum, as well as at the South Beach and on the west coast near Utersum, there are all sorts of culinary discoveries. Beach restaurants are particularly cozy when storms rage over the North Sea. Then, enjoy one of the traditional fish dishes of the region in the warmth. Tea plays a significant role in the culture of North Frisia. Enjoyed with the obligatory Kluntje (a piece of rock candy), some sweet cream, and often a shot of rum, it is a daily ritual in Friesland during the cold season. Coffee drinkers might order a Pharisäer, a coffee with rum and cream. A piece of Frisian tart, a puff pastry with plum jam, complements it perfectly.
The island is compact yet offers several attractions for those interested in culture. The Dr. Carl Häberlin Museum in Wyk, simply called the "Frisian Museum" by locals and visitors, provides an entertaining introduction to Frisian cultural history. Other focal points include seafaring and the nature of the North Sea. The museum opened its doors back in 1908. A century later, since 2009, the "Museum Kunst der Westküste" (Museum of West Coast Art) in Wyk on Föhr has been welcoming interested island vacationers. Here too, the thematic focus is "sea and coast." The museum features changing exhibitions of classic and contemporary artists. The range of cultural events is particularly extensive during the summer season: The annual multi-day jazz festival attracts many visitors to the island. Athletes enjoy the Föhr Marathon, and the harbor festival with "Föhr on Fire" is a highlight for all ages every summer. An important tip for planning your vacation: Find out about the events early, as many affordable holiday accommodations, including private rentals, are booked out during these dates and should be reserved in advance. During this period, it is difficult to find suitable accommodation at the last minute. Tips from residents or the landlord are helpful for insider tips on day trips.
Located a forty-five-minute ferry ride off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein, the island of Föhr lies amidst the Wadden Sea. Spanning 82 square kilometers, it is the second largest of the North Frisian Islands, offering a wide range of accommodations. Only Sylt, located northwest of Föhr, is larger. To the southwest, between the North Sea and the Wadden Sea, lies the island of Amrum and the Halligen. The only way to reach your accommodation is by ferry from Dagebüll to Wyk on Föhr in the southeast of the island. As soon as the ferry lines are cast off, your vacation begins. The journey takes you through the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park, a protected landscape with an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna.
