What do you need to experience in Erbach in Odenwald?
There's Much to See in the Little Town
Among the most popular attractions in Erbach is the Residence Castle of the Counts of Erbach. The main structure dates back to 1736. The castle acquired its current Neo-Baroque appearance through a renovation in 1902. The impressive keep dates back to the medieval moated castle. It received its Gothic spire in the 15th century. The large castle complex also includes the pleasure garden with the Baroque orangery. On the first floor of the castle, you will find extensive collections from Count Franz I and his successors. In the Deer Gallery, you can find a collection of abnormal antlers. Franz I also collected Greek and Roman sculptures. North of the Residence Castle, the old town center was located around the current street in the Städtel during the Middle Ages. Here you can find the courtyards of the former castle men. Also worth seeing are the Protestant town church, whose tower was once part of the town fortifications, and the district office, built in the Renaissance style. A top tip for vacationers with a holiday home or apartment is also the German Ivory Museum in Erbach, which celebrated its reopening in the castle in 2016. Spanning 450 m², the chronologically arranged exhibition showcases the history of Erbach's ivory carving art. The museum is open from March to December. If you are in Erbach in the Odenwald in the last week of July, you can visit the Erbach Meadow Market. The program of the folk festival includes an equestrian and show jumping tournament as well as horse races. Excursions to the surrounding area are also recommended. For instance, visit Michelstadt with its beautiful historic half-timbered old town. The Odenwald and Toy Museum here are also worth seeing. In the old town of Eberbach, you can visit the four differently designed towers of the former town fortifications. It also becomes exciting in the Arboretum or at the Eberbach Castle ruins.
Where can I eat out in Erbach in Odenwald?
Green are the Sauces
Have you found a cozy apartment privately in Erbach? Or a spacious holiday home in a perfect setting? Then we recommend you explore the culinary highlights of the region. A special delicacy is the famous Ahle Wurst. In no other state in Germany has sausage production been refined over the years as in Hesse. The Handkäse is also delicious, which originated at a time when the cheese was shaped by hand. On the menus, you will also find the phrase "Handkäs mit Musik". This refers to a strong, spicy marinade made of caraway, vinegar, onions, and oil in which the cheese is marinated. Rich in herbs is the Green Sauce, served with meat, roast, potatoes, or boiled eggs. Traditionally, the sauce season in Hesse and the Odenwald starts on Maundy Thursday and ends with the first frost in autumn.
