As always, I enjoyed my stay in this beautiful holiday home very much and will book again for next spring. I would like to report a "flaw": For a stay of more than a week, it would be appropriate to provide more than just one towel/bath towel and 2 kitchen towels! Furthermore, these were extremely infused with fragrances from detergent/fabric softener. Otherwise, everything was great!

Three islands are located in Lake Chiemsee near the shores of Prien and Breitbrunn: the large Herreninsel, the smaller Fraueninsel, and the uninhabited Krautinsel. Fraueninsel is especially worth visiting because of the monastery Frauenwörth, founded in 782. Additionally, there are more worldly attractions. Visitors can explore the island via established paths, catching glimpses of locally made artworks and enjoying the unparalleled panorama. Even more famous is Fraueninsel's larger sister, Herreninsel. This is due to the palace complexes built there. The Old Palace houses a monastery accessible to visitors during the summer months. However, the highlight of Herrenchiemsee is the New Palace, commissioned by the fairy-tale king Ludwig II. The plans of the extravagant monarch were never completed, as construction ended with his death in 1886. Nonetheless, the impressive palace, modeled after the Palace of Versailles, is worth a visit. During the summer months, guests can ride horse-drawn carriages from the ferry terminal to the palace. The overwhelming gardens along the way can be admired on foot or from the carriage.

This way, kids can romp around in the exciting pools indoors and enjoy the lake outdoors. Not into the cool water, but up into the air, is where you go in the climbing forest at Lake Chiemsee. 13 courses challenge the whole family to physical feats. Otherwise, the landscape offers numerous places for bike rides, walks, or hikes along the shore with lake views or through the Alpine countryside.

The cuisine of the region is traditionally characterized by two contrasts: hearty meat dishes on one side, sweet pastries on the other. This has to do with the regional agriculture and the Catholicism of the region. There is a lot of meat, especially pork, throughout the year, except during Lent - at least that used to be the case. Then the pastries come into play. Especially in the summer, a snack in a beer garden or organized as a picnic is recommended. Sour pressed headcheese, browned sweetbreads, ox muzzle salad, meatloaf, or real cheese, especially Emmental, are the traditional delicacies that should not be missing at a genuine Bavarian snack.

Part of the New Palace Herrenchiemsee is the museum dedicated to Ludwig II, located in the south wing of the prestigious building.
