Three islands are located in Lake Chiemsee near the shores of Prien and Breitbrunn: the large Herreninsel, the smaller Fraueninsel, and the uninhabited Krautinsel. However, the highlight of Herrenchiemsee is the New Palace, commissioned by the fairy-tale king Ludwig II. The plans of the extravagant monarch were never completed, as construction ended with his death in 1886. Nonetheless, the impressive palace, modeled after the Palace of Versailles, is worth a visit.
