The main attraction near your affordable holiday home or apartment is undoubtedly the Richard Wagner Festival Theatre, or Bayreuth Festival Theatre, on the Green Hill. It was built between 1872 and 1875. In addition to the theatre buildings, the Old and the New Castle are highlights of a visit to Bayreuth. The Old Castle on Maximilianstraße dates back to the 15th century, while the New Castle is from the 18th century. These buildings served as the residence for the Margraves of Brandenburg-Bayreuth. The Baroque court garden of the castle invites visitors to stroll and linger.
Stroll along Friedrichsstraße, the town's magnificent street. Most of the houses with typical sandstone facades were built in the 18th century. The granite stones of the street paving come from the Fichtel Mountains. Among the churches in Bayreuth, the City Church "Holy Trinity" from the 15th century, the Hospital Church from the 16th century, and the Palace Church "Our Lady" from the 18th century are particularly noteworthy. The City Church near Friedrichsstraße was largely destroyed in a major fire in 1605 but was rebuilt in the following years. The magnificent three-aisled basilica is in the late Gothic style. Not far from the Margravial Opera House stands the city's synagogue from 1760. It is the oldest synagogue in Germany still used by the Jewish community today. Also, consider a trip to Mistelgau. Now book accommodation on a farm, perhaps in Fichtelberg or in Ahorntal, and explore the surroundings of the Franconian Switzerland with its beautiful nature. The perfect holiday with your family can begin!
A major highlight for your family holiday is the Prehistoric Museum. Here, you and your family can learn more about dinosaurs, crystals, prehistoric plants, and fossils in various exhibitions. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM. Admission is 3.50€ and free for children under 6 years. You can see more animals (this time a bit more contemporary) at the Röhrensee Zoo. Here, kangaroos, flamingos, and tragopans are kept in species-appropriate conditions. There is also a water playground and boat rentals in the summer. The park is open daily and admission is free.
Franconia is a renowned gourmet region. No matter where you spend your holiday in the area, you will find Rostbratwurst in numerous variations everywhere. The Nuremberger is the classic among sausages, from Coburg comes a specialty grilled over pine cones, and from Kulmbach a variant with a particularly high amount of veal. Speaking of meat: The main ingredient in Franconia is meat – mostly pork as sausage, but also beef, lamb, and game. Vegetables are included but usually only as a side dish. With one exception: asparagus. This tender root vegetable is a delight in the spring months. The favorite drink of the residents beyond the wine border is beer. Nowhere else is the brewery density as high as here. Around your holiday apartment with a balcony near the city or your holiday home in Bayreuth, you will find traditional inns and restaurants of all colors. Gourmets as well as fans of simple cuisine will find something to their taste. A visit to the long-established Weihenstephan Brewery on Bahnhofstraße is a must.
The Bayreuth Festival attracts thousands of opera fans from around the world each year. Also worth seeing and a highlight in theatre history is the Margravial Opera House, built between 1744 and 1748. It has been preserved in all its original details from that period and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2012. Since 1999, the Old Baroque House has housed the Bayreuth Art Museum. Here you will find changing exhibitions on exciting topics. The collections mainly focus on 20th-century art. Admission is 2€ and reduced only 1€, open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM (as of December 2023).
