Description
"Take a break" ... in our beautiful water tower, the only one in central Germany where you can stay as guests. Treat yourself to a few days off from everyday life and enjoy the beautiful countryside and the many nearby sights and towns
The minimum rental period for this property is
April to October from 4 nights,
November to March from 5 nights.
In case of corona measures/official requirements, free cancellations are possible until the day of arrival. No compulsory testing in the holiday property.
Our holiday home offers enough space for up to 5 people and 1 dog or up to 4 people and 2 dogs
What do you get for the rental price
- Use of the 95m² holiday home and the 1300 m² fenced garden exclusively by you, (no other guests)

- Garden furniture, 2 sun loungers, hanging chairs & hammock. Fire bowl and barbecue including firewood & charcoal
- we clean the holiday home free of charge at the end of your stay.

- Use of washing machine, hair dryer, coffee powder, 1 bottle of water, 1 bottle of wine, dishwashing soaps
- in summer, fresh herbs from the herb garden to pick yourself.
The tower is not barrier-free because of the many stairs and not suitable for children under 5 years
Dogs allowed, per dog by arrangement: 29,00 Euro per stay and pet. We are a non-smoking house, smoking allowed in the garden.
If you arrive with your electric car or use your own e-bike, you can charge it directly at our play barn via 230V plug or at the in-house wallbox (charging plug type 2) with in-house solar power or green electricity from Greenpeace-Energy
The Großheringen water tower was built in 1899 as a water tower for the railway and was thoroughly renovated in 1995-1998 and extensively modernised and renovated in 2015-2016. An exceptional holiday home not only for railway fans.
You have around 95m² of living space spread over 5 floors. You can reach the roof via 67 steps. In the cold season, underfloor heating provides warmth. No extra costs for cleaning, W-Lan, bed linen and towels.
The tower has a fully equipped modern fitted kitchen on the ground floor with electric cooker, oven/grill, dishwasher, fridge with freezer compartment, as well as plenty of crockery and cooking utensils. A washing machine is also at your disposal. The dining table comfortably seats 5 adults.
In the living room you can sit comfortably on the round couch, listen to music, watch TV and videos or surf the internet via the free wi-fi. A small selection of DVDs and CDs is available.
The 2nd floor houses the reading and games corner in the anteroom. Here you can choose from an extensive collection of books, magazines and games while sitting in a wing chair. Through a water-glass door you enter the bathroom area, equipped with WC, washbasin, shower with seating area, hairdryer and towels. The ceiling of the room here is formed by the floor of the old historic water tank made of cast steel.
On the way to the 3rd floor you can take a look inside the water tank floor. Around 40m³ of cooling water was stored here for the steam locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn until the 1960s. Once you have reached the top, you will find yourself in the bedroom, the former water tank (dismantled). In addition to a comfortable double bed and a sofa bed, you will find enough storage space for your clothes and travel utensils.
Via a solid wood space-saving staircase you reach the sleeping loft. Here are 3 more cosy bunks, which are very popular with children as well as adults. (slatted frames with real mattresses set into the floor) From here you have a beautiful view of the green surroundings and the adjacent railway area through the skylights.
The 2 bedrooms are not rooms that can be closed off with doors. Each floor is a whole room. Only the bathroom can be closed with a door.
The outside area offers space for 2 cars, a cosy outdoor seating area with garden furniture, lawns, basketball court and well-kept flower garden with forest path. 2 garden loungers, hammock and hanging chairs invite you to relax. Table tennis, darts and foosball can be played in the barn, not only in rainy weather. 4 bicycles can be used for excursions for a small fee. Fire bowl with firewood and open-air barbecue with charcoal available. A picnic basket is available for excursions.

Location and surroundings of object
The water tower stands on the outskirts of the municipality of Großheringen. near where the Ilm flows into the Saale and the Ilm Cycle Path, 3km from Bad Sulza or Bad Kösen and 14km from Naumburg and Apolda, in the Weimarer Land, federal state of Thuringia. This region is also called the Tuscany of the East because of its landscape, climate and viticulture. From here you can reach cities worth seeing such as Weimar, Erfurt, Halle, Jena, Sömmerda and Leipzig in a short time.
Below the property is the railway area with a manageable train service. it is a 300-metre walk to the railway station, from where regional trains run at regular intervals to Naumburg, Halle, Leipzig, Apolda, Weimar, Erfurt, Jena and Sömmerda
Above, there is a village road with moderate traffic and a small residential area with adjoining woodland and vineyards, ideal for hiking and walking your dog. The Ilm and Saale rivers flow through the village. The Saale is ideal for canoeing through the famous Saale valley with its many castles and vineyards. In the village you will find a dog sports field, riding arena, tennis courts, football field, playground and a landing stage for paddle boats with a rest area. In Bad Sulza, 3 km away, you will find a beautiful open-air swimming pool, the Toskana-Therme with sauna area, recommendable gastronomy and extensive shopping facilities, as well as a hairdresser, post office, doctors and pharmacy
Take a canoe trip on the Saale, relax in the Toskanatherme and sauna facilities in Bad Sulza, cycle through the Weimarer Land on the Ilmradweg. Take a trip by car or train
- to Naumburg to the cathedral, to the cinema or a stroll through the historic old town,
- apolda to the open-air swimming pool, the bell museum or the brewery,
- to Jena, the city of science with Carl Zeiss & Ernst Abbe, the botanical garden and the cultural arena,
- weimar, the city of classics, with Goethe & Schiller, the Bauhaus Museum, the Spiegelzelt and the Anna Amalia Library,
- to medieval Erfurt with its cathedral and Petersberg Citadel, the Federal Horticultural Show/EGA, the Erfurt Trade Fair and the zoo,
- Hiking on the Way of St. James, Via Regia from Erfurt to Naumburg, from cathedral to cathedral
Hike to the castles in the Saale valley, to the vineyards or visit Nebra Ark with the famous sky disc.
There is so much on offer here within a radius of 50 km that the days will fly by and you will certainly want to come back a second time.

Cancellation terms:
Free cancellation possible up to 42 days before the arrival date.
Up to 6 weeks before the arrival date, cancellation is free of charge. From 42 days before arrival, we charge a cancellation fee equal to the deposit of €100. In the event of government restrictions related to COVID-19 or a ban on rentals, free cancellations are also possible up to the arrival day.

Environmentally friendly holiday home: Arrival is also possible by bike or train. The train station Großheringen, as well as the Ilmradweg and the Saale-Radweg are only 300m away. The water tower is powered by green electricity from Greenpeace Energie. From July 2020, a 10 kW photovoltaic system will supply the tower and your electric car with solar power. We practice waste separation and ask our holidaymakers to avoid waste. We use only recycled paper for mail, advertising and in the household. The tower is insulated with hemp and cellulose, as much wood as possible is used and the floors are PVC-free.

Blue Tower
The five-member family was able to spread out well across the five levels of the skillfully built tower, and the little dog was also warmly welcomed. Of course, they enjoyed their vacation on all five levels. The father, the carpenter, rated the expansion as top-notch and was able to really relax with his wife in the bedroom, while the children had their own world at the very top. The play barn was part of it, and the lovingly designed garden with its armada of watering cans delighted everyone. The children did not want to leave, but the adults were called by work.

The world's most perfect accommodation!
Thank you very much for the wonderful days in the water tower; it was a unique experience. Not only the water tower itself and the beautiful garden – we had expected that.
The play barn was a great addition that we also enjoyed with games like foosball, table tennis, darts, chess, among others. I was especially fascinated by the many small design highlights, such as the lamps, ventilation design, and especially the curtain hangers for the bathroom window (with the integrated faucet), as well as the blue submarine lights in the hallway that lit up when there was light in the bathroom. What a grand "Occupied" signal.
In my life, I have stayed in hundreds of extraordinary hotels, Airbnbs, vacation rentals, and other accommodations in over 80 countries around the world. Among them were also more luxurious, adventurous, and extraordinary places. But:
The water tower was, of all these accommodations so far, the number 1 when it comes to the thoughtfulness and perfection of preparation down to the smallest detail, to enable guests to have an optimal stay. Crazy!
I celebrated every new little thing as soon as I discovered it. And the sum of the little things, the exceedingly tasteful and loving furnishings, as well as the perfectly equipped kitchen, have led me to crown the water tower in Großheringen today as the most perfect accommodation in my life.

Everything was great, we felt very comfortable. The only point of criticism is the location, which obviously cannot be changed. However, the traffic, especially in the evenings and at night, is really extreme. It becomes uncomfortable when young people try out their mopeds in the evenings! The train traffic, on the other hand, hardly bothers us.

Freut uns, dass es Ihnen bei uns gefallen hat. Leider ist zur Zeit etwas mehr Verkehr gewesen, da es Umleitungen im Landkreis gab und dadurch einige mehr als sonst die Strecke über Großheringen genutzt haben. Die Dorfjugend selbst ist leider nicht immer Rücksichtsvoll und anscheinend ist es einigen Eltern auch egal, das ihre Kinder immer mal wieder mit Ihren frisierten Simsons das Dorf durchqueren. Wir werden wohl mal wieder mit dem Ortsbürgermeister reden müssen. Danke für den Hinweis.
