Location and surroundings of object
In the centre of the Stráže district, as its very name suggests, arose as a guard community protecting Hungarian borders. The oldest written reference comes from 1276. Its history and economy were closely connected with its neighbours - Spišská Sobota, Veľká and Matejovce. The town had an agricultural character. The craftsmen worked here only for the needs of the local population. The interesting thing is that in Stráže wealth was not inherited, it was also sold within the family. A mill was built on the river Popper around the year 1758. In the same year there were 80 citizens, 21 tenants, 73 peasant servants and 220 children living in Stráže. The new mill was built in 1848. In 1927 the mill was won by Jozef Girgaš, who was the last miller until nationalisation in 1949. In 1940 there were 778 inhabitants living in Stráže, in 1944 - 1945 about 300 Germans left the village. In 1952, an agricultural production cooperative was established here.
The inhabitants of Stráže preserved their traditions and led a rich spiritual life. Roman Catholic Church built a monastery for the Redemptorist order on the original Gothic church of St. Jan Krstiteľ from the 14th century in 1927. The town square is adorned with the magnificent statue of Immaculata (1724 - 1730), which was reconstructed in 2005. As one of the first in Spiš, the ideas of the Reformation began to percolate here around 1527. In 1784 the brick Evangelical Classicist church was built. On the town square there is the building of the town hall, which was reconstructed in 1996.
Stráže is known in the neighbourhood for its rich cultural and social life. The theatre company Ozvena is very successful. The first theatre scenes were performed in German by the theatre actors at Easter in 1896. One of the founders of Slovak theatre was Julius Maličký (1901 - 1978). He was a tailor by training, but he was fascinated by theatre. The first performance was "The Stone Way" in 1919. From that time onwards, a tradition developed in Stráže, according to which theatre performances were always held at Christmas and Easter. In 1920 Julius Maličký became a member of the volunteer fire brigade corps and in the years 1930 - 1945 he was elected its leader.
The mentioned fire brigade corps has a long tradition in Stráže, even before 1863, when the joint fire brigade corps was founded by the inhabitants of Matejovce, Spišská Sobota and Poprad. The common and exceptionally active leader of the firemen was Eduard Blasy (1820 - 1888) from Veľká. The volunteer fire brigade corps with the corps in Spišská Sobota is one of the most active in the town and in the Poprad district. Support in the town is also enjoyed by several sporting activities. The most famous sports personality is the hockey player Peter Bondra, who spent his childhood here.
