Our summer house is 500 m. from the beach, 200 m, from the shopping street and 200 m from the dunes.
Egmond is a small coastal town in the Netherlands. It consists of the three districts Egmond-Binnen, Egmond aan den Hoef and finally Egmond aan Zee, the largest district. Egmond is located in the province of North Holland. It is about 35 kilometres from Amsterdam and 10 kilometres from Alkmaar. Together with the villages of Schoorl and Bergen, they form the municipality of Bergen.
Egmond aan Zee is the part of Egmond that lies directly by the sea and is favoured by tourists. For this reason, the village of Egmond is often mistakenly referred to simply as Egmond aan Zee. The old centre of Egmond aan Zee, with its small, typically Dutch houses, is dominated by the van Speijk lighthouse, which dates from 1834. In the 1950s, on the advice of the school doctors, many city children were sent to Egmond aan Zee to the Princess Beatrix Colony for six weeks or three months because of their poor health. Along the beach section - on the so-called promenade - large concrete apartment blocks have sprung up, counteracting the actual village flair. In recent years, this trend has been counteracted. Bordering Egmond an Zee to the south and north is the Noordhollandse Duinreservaat, which is only accessible for an entrance fee and is home to many species of coastal animals and birds as well as private horticulture and livestock farming. On foot, on horseback or by bicycle, numerous walks are possible along various routes on partly developed and paved paths. An offshore wind farm consisting of 36 wind turbines is located off the coast. ()
